What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ?

I posted a question earlier about how to get rid of depression and many people suggested Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The problem is i don’t know what it is. Please help!

It’s a kind of therapy that appeals to your intellect (your ability to reason) to try to get you to change your behavior. In other words, let’s suppose through therapy you discover that you tend to get depressed after talking with your mother on the telephone, CBT might have you try talking with her at different times, taking more control over the conversation, or going jogging after you talk to her. If one of those helps, then you have to repeat over and over until it becomes a behavior that you’ll do almost without thinking.

In short it is a form of therapy concerned with recognizing the behavior and thoughts that result in the problem.
In the case of depression it involves recognizing the thoughts, and, to some extent the situations which lead you towards feeling down and avoiding them or, by recognizing a line of thought that will lead down that dark path, avoiding it.
It often involves a practical approach, for example the therapist may ask you to keep a diary of your moods and thoughts for a couple of weeks, you can then go through it together and discover the problems you need to work through.
