What are the typical medications prescribed for panic disorder.?

What are some of the medications that are not approved for panic disorder but are prescribed by physicians for this disorder? I suffer from panic disorder and would like to know some suggestions when I ask my doctor. What meds has anyone had success with?

Hi, I developed panic disorder about 6 months ago after a friends death. Let me tell you it has not been a fun ride. I was pretty much homebound as well like someone already mentioned. I began my treatment with Effexor XR. You will feel the side effects immediately. It took about a month to feel the positive effects of the drug and the side effects subside so be patient. These side effects heightened the anxiety as well and I felt like I was in a constant panic attack, day and night, but I knew it was my only hope because of how bad the panic attacks were before the med. Hopefully this wont be the case for you but I wanted you to understand this before you begin treatment, so that you hang in there like I did. I can happily say, after 4 months of treatment, I am panic free and only feel some anxiety every once in a while. Just in the past week, I switched to Cymbalta, to see if it would help alleviate a constant but livable side effect I received from Effexor which was a slight tremor through my body. So far so good. My nervousness is mostly gone with the cymbalta. The one side effect Im getting now is just I feel more tired on cymbalta, but Im betting that will subside within a week or so. Also if the anxiety is too increased for you when you begin taking the med, ask your doctor about Klonopin or Xanex until the antidepressant begins working for you. Klonopin and Xanex are addictive so dont stay on them long. I couldnt take either of them due to my job, but if you can it will probobly help in the beginning. Oh, also I had pretty bad insmonia for those first few weeks and had to take ambien to help get to sleep. It helped a little but not great. Hang in there, especially for a good month when it may be really tough, but the end result I believe will satisfy you.
I have severe panic disorder and I take an SSRI called Celexa. It really helps. Really, most SSRI’s help with panic disorder. Also you may take xanax as needed. And yes, you may mix the xanax with the SSRI’s.
