Article by Emma Hudson

There are two treatments for panic attacks – medication and psychological therapies. Some people advocate the former while others support the former; some insist on a combination of the two. It all gets a bit confusing so how do you know which treatment course to follow?

First of all, there is no single approach that suits everybody when it comes to panic attacks and anxiety disorders. A cornerstone of effective therapy is that it is individually tailored to the person after a detailed study of the symptoms and when they occur. This should apply regardless of which panic attack treatment you choose to follow – and, in the end, it is your choice and you have to feel comfortable with it.

One of the most effective psychological approaches is that of cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT. Studies have shown CBT to be more successful in the long run than medication. To be more specific, more people who were treated with CBT remained panic free six months after treatment stopped than those who were on medication. A further study showed that while medication may be effective in treating the symptoms of panic attacks, the benefits stopped when the medication stopped. That is, people had to keep taking the drugs which then lead to unpleasant side effects.

CBT therapy requires work and commitment by the therapist and, more importantly, by the person seeking treatment. It’s not as easy as taking drugs a few times a day and the effects are not seen so quickly, but if you compare a drug free life free of panic attacks to taking medication for the rest of your life, then the advantages are obvious.

The focus of CBT is getting you to solve the problem yourself so you feel in control of your life again. This is very important as one of the biggest fears of those suffering from panic attacks is that they have lost control over themselves, often to the extent that they feel they are losing their minds. The ‘cognitive’ part of the therapy means changing the way you think through a very gradual desensitization process.

For example, let’s say your first attack occurred in a crowded room, at a party perhaps. Because the feelings were so intense and you were so frightened, you never want to experience it again. So, you go out of your way to avoid that situation – you make up excuses so as not to face a reoccurence. But this means that you are sitting at home by yourself when everyone else is at the party having fun. Not an ideal situation.

So, desensitization means taking very small steps firstly to get you used to the idea of going to a party (cognition) and then getting you there (behavior). Your first step might be getting dressed as if you are going. That’s it. Just dealing with the feeling that you are going is enough for one day. This may go on for several days until you feel comfortable with the thought that you are going to a party. When you are ready, you take the next step which may be getting dressed and then opening the front door as if you are on your way out. That’s it for the second step. When you’re ready, the third step is getting dressed, opening the front door and closing it. And so on.

While you are going through these steps at your own pace, you are also taught how to deal with the conflicting feelings you have. Controlling your breathing is instrumental here. Rapid breathing is often the catalyst for the other symptoms you experience during a panic attack so if you have techniques for keeping your breathing rate steady then this could be the difference between a slight twinge of anxiety and a full-blown attack.

Many therapists agree that 10-12 sessions are sufficient for most people to be able to manage their problem on their own. After the first five or six, improvement can be seen and the person begins to feel confident that they can regain control of their lives.A final step in the treatment process is to teach management techniques in case panic threatens to rear its ugly head in the future. Armed with this knowledge, it’s a very real possibility that panic attacks are a thing of the past.

Article by Richard J. Kennedy

Panic and anxiety disorder affects close to 40 million people in the United States, and those totals reflect only the adult population. It is also estimated that 1 in every 10 children and adolescents will also struggle with some form of anxiety. So, where exactly can you turn for information and support if you suspect that you or a loved one may be affected?

Anxiety is a perfectly normal human emotion, but when anxiety becomes severe, persistent and gets in the way of normal functioning it could be an indication of an anxiety disorder. While there are many different types of anxiety disorders, including Generalized Snxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and Agoraphobia, the one characteristic that unifies all of them is a pervasive sense of fear and unwanted, uncomfortable thoughts. These thoughts and fears, when left untreated can cause serious problems – both personally and professionally – for the anxiety or panic sufferer.

Anxiety disorders have no known cause, and depending on who you talk to you about the origin of your particular disorder you may get several different responses. Severe stress, family history and major life changes, such as the loss of a loved one, are all thought to be contributing factors in anxiety disorders, and many doctors believe the condition may be caused by a chemical imbalance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.

Where to Turn for Help

If you suspect that you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder, the first thing you should do is consult your family physician for a complete examination. Explain your symptoms in detail, including how these symptoms affect your daily functioning. If your doctor confirms the presence of an anxiety disorder, he or she may then refer you to a mental health professional for treatment. Usually this treatment will consist of a combination of prescription medication, to help ease the symptoms of your anxiety, and psychotherapy designed to help you deal with the underlying cause of those symptoms.

Despite how an anxiety disorder can sometimes make you feel, you are not alone. Depending on where you live and the type of anxiety disorder you are coping with, you may be able to find a support group of people experiencing the same type of challenges that you are facing. If there isn’t a support group in your area, there are many online support groups that may be able to help.

How to Find Out More about Panic and Anxiety Disorders

In the past, information about anxiety disorders was hard to come by, but with the popularity of the internet all of that has changed. There are literally thousands of online sites, including the one operated by the National Institute for Mental Health, or NIMH.com, dedicated to providing current and useful information to those suffering from all types of anxiety disorders and phobias.

Living with an anxiety disorder can be a frightening and frustrating experience, but it doesn’t have to be a lonely one. If anxiety is beginning to cause problems in your life, seek out medical attention and support immediately, and take the first step towards reclaiming your life.

Article by Charlotte Wilson

The experience of panic attack is so terrible that it jolts not only the physical existence of a person, but also proves to be destructive as it drains you psychologically. Several techniques are being used over the world as cure for panic attacks; however, studies reveal that it is very important to know and understand the reasons behind your inherent fear that triggers panic attacks.

The reasons for panic attacks may vary from person to person and so also the treatment required for panic attack cure. Some of you might be afraid of public speaking, while some might fear driving; however in almost all cases it happens that the person suffering from anxiety disorder is aloof from the idea of being struck by a bout of panic attack.

Cure for panic attacks is not an impossible proposition if you start worrying less for your inherent fears and get mentally prepared to overcome anxiety that triggers such attacks. Research have shown that anxiety explodes into full blown panic attacks when a person is constantly worrying about certain happenings in life and at the same time lives in fear of suffering another anxiety or panic attack.

Anxiety Release Methods for Panic Attack Cure

There are several proven methods to cure panic attacks; the most practiced by doctors being prescription medicines. Even though medications offer immediate relief from anxiety and panic attacks, they cannot be considered as panic attack cure taking into account possibility of side-effects on long-term treatment.

Other methods offering notable cure for panic attacks are cognitive behavioral techniques other than following strict dietary regime and exercises including yoga and aerobics as well. Apart from that there are holistic treatments like meditation and aromatherapy that can provide soothing effect and calm your senses. However, most of these forms of treatment cannot assure permanent cure for panic attacks and can only be effective as temporary and short term relief.

Self-help techniques is possibly the most realistic cure for panic attacks, with several proven anxiety release methods paving the way for an anxiety free and stress free life. The basic concept of these self-help methods is to drive panic away by preparing your body and mind to get over these anxiety and fears. It is very important for you to make yourself believe that the situations or the conditions that scare you are momentous and should not overpower you on any counts.

Simple Effective Techniques and Cure for Panic Attacks

Most people after each passing panic attack feels as if they have survived a heart attack. The feeling is so intense that it mostly develops into a phobia leading to fear psychosis for forthcoming panic attacks. One of the foremost things you need to realize is ‘what triggered panic attacks’.
Dear Misty, I’m a twenty year old gay boy living in Vancouver BC, I suffer from OCD and panic attacks among other phobias since I was nine years old. On my birthday (Aug 1) the three only friends I had decided to call me on the day of my birthday to tell me they would not be coming over because they didn’t want to be friends anymore because of my anxiety problems. I guessed they found it to much to deal with. Now my question is, since my birthday, I have been inside my house everyday and devolved social anxiety, I’m scared to leave my house, and I don’t have friends to talk to, or help me leave. I feel lost, confused, and frustrated. I’m tired of living with anxiety, it has ruined my life. How can I make new friends when I’m scared of having a panic attack out in public? asked by TheCircus This is OBVIOUSLY a VERY REAL and DIFFICULT question to answer… Witness as I try my best in this VLOG… but I will also repeat myself here in saying that I DO BELIEVE you need to seek a therapist and start to iron out the wrinkles that plague you. If anything… it just helps to talk about things that bother you :)

When Panic Disorder Symptoms Goes Untreated – A Positive Look At Your Options

When you possess an illness, you look to a medical professional to fix it. Nevertheless, when you are living in denial or trepidation, sometimes disregarding your panic disorder symptoms, can regularly lead to avoiding of treatment. This can cause crucial consequences for you and your way of life.

No one who has ever had a panic attacks would ever plan to have another. Yet, thousands of people who have experienced panic attacks go without therapy.

No matter what the foundation cause of the attack, some people simply are in denial or decline treatment. They don’t wish for inquiries asked or others to think they have some type of mental instability. Experiencing an anxiety attack doesn’t necessarily mean you are going crazy, but can be a mark of another dilemma that should be dealt with. Let’s observe what happens when panic attacks and panic disorders symptoms, are left untreated.

Self-fulfilling ProphecyAnxiety attacks that arise repeatedly often leads to panic disorder. While numerous panic attacks take place as a result of some form of triggering circumstances, the trigger with panic disorder may be you. Just the thought of having another panic attack can actually bring one about. It’s called “anticipatory anxiety.” What you fear is an irrational apprehension that something unlikely may come about. You fear an irrational fear which brings on the panic attack. Prophecy is fulfilled.

Panic Disorder Symptoms Lacking Treatment Can Cause Withdrawals From SocietyWhat happens when you burn your arm on the stove? In the future you shun placing your hand in the identical spot and experiencing a similar thing. The same sort of thing happens with individuals who have experienced panic attacks.

No one wants to be caught in a public place when something like an anxiety attack occurs again. There is no guarantee that you will have another one however your mind convinces you otherwise. As a result, to reduce the chances of others seeing and asking questions, you start to avoid social places. That includes parties, family functions, stores, restaurants, movies, recitals, and the like. You get the picture.

At the extreme, you acquire phobias like agoraphobia. Once regarded as a phobia that develops on its own, it is now believed that it is a result of untreated anxiety disorders. To guard yourself, you avoid other people and places where crowds will come together. You strip off yourself from humanity to protect yourself from the embarrassment.Disregarding Panic Disorder Symptoms Can Lead To Physical IllnessStress can kill; plain and straightforward.

Living a life where your body is always on high alert can take its toll on your immune system. Withdrawing from associates can lead to depression and, in serious cases, thoughts of suicide. Your coping methods are going to be skewed also. Several turn to drugs, alcohol, or food, all of which bring along even more problems for an already complex set of state of affairs.

Reduce your alcohol consumption. Alcohol can be described as depressant. For people who are trying to condense their panic, this will only boomerang. As a depressant, alcohol can lead toward irrational behaviors which may trigger a panic attackWithout some form of treatment, panic attack and panic disorder is sure to persist and grow worse.

Consult a health care professional trained to accommodate anxiety disorders about what you can do. Get back to the business of living your life rather than running from your panic attacks.

Hey guys :) In this video, we will go over a few steps to help you control the panic attacks you may be experiencing. Panic attacks can be defined as the physical manifestation of anxiety, and controlling any future attacks lay in understanding the fearful response that our body gives to certain triggers. We will first of all, try to identify the cause of this fear. Then we will create empowering thoughts to help you cope. Next, we will try to visualize ourself coping. Finally, we will practice a relaxing breathing technique to help you control the physical symptoms and try to help you deal with any future panic attacks.

Article by Alex J Schneider

A sudden rise of extreme anxiety serves as the primary characteristic of panic attacks. A person suffering from panic attacks admits experiencing intense fear and apprehension. Physiological manifestations of panic attacks include palpitation of the heart, shortness of breath, trembling and sweating. Experts had a hard time narrowing down panic attack cause but studies support that panic attacks may be triggered by several factors that are of biological and environmental nature.

Genetics is one of the factors considered to be a probable root of panic attacks. A panic disorder can be inherited in the same way that the color of the eyes can also be inherited. Genetics can increase a person’s probability of encountering a panic attack. Panic attack is considered more prevalent among individuals who have family members or relatives suffering from panic disorder or other related disorders.

Brain abnormalities are also another potential biological explanation of panic attacks. Certain changes in the functions of a brain may lead to panic attacks. Panic attacks are often associated to schizophrenia, post traumatic stress disorder and other psychotic disorders. A psychotic breakdown may serve as an indication of the potential occurrence of an anxiety disorder such as panic attack or post traumatic stress disorder. Panic attacks also involve the human body’s natural fight or flight tendencies. A person responds to any threats through physical and mental strategies including heartbeat acceleration and breath deepening. The panic attack triggers these feelings even in the absence of danger. Thus, even when there is obviously no danger, the panic attack makes the person feel extremely anxious.

Panic attacks may also be caused by various life stressors. A stressful event often causes stress for an individual. However, a major life transition that causes change in the lifestyle of an individual can also be considered as a major stressor. Some of the major life stressors include death of a loved one, divorce or separation, and even positive and happy events such as getting married or moving to a new school or company. During the major life stressor, a person becomes less resistant thus leading to the rise of the physical predisposition. This rise of physical predisposition can trigger a potential panic attack.

Addiction is also another societal factor that can trigger panic attacks. An individual may become more prone to suffering from a panic attack due to intoxication with alcohol or addiction with drugs. Usually, the panic attack is triggered by a combination of environmental and biological factors. These panic attacks can even occur at a time they are least expected to occur. The physical symptoms of a panic attack that the individual experiences serve as the individual’s identification of the panic attack. Thus, these physical symptoms are also often misinterpreted as an automatic indication of a panic attack. A palpitating heart does not always lead to a panic attack. When the person is excessively worried that he or she might have an attack, just because of his or her palpitation, that panic attack may indeed occur.

Question by ellagirl: How can I get my boyfriend to support me in overcoming panic disorder?
My boyfriend seems to not want to help me overcome my panic disorder. I know the main responsibility rests in my own hands, but quite often the fear wins. Is it wrong for me to want him to encourage me to drive? Is it far fetched for me to believe that he might get a power trip out of this?

Best answer:

Answer by Lacey
Talk to him seriously about it. If he does not care then he is NOT a good boyfriend to try to help you.

Article by Carolyn Miller

Most of us are well aware of the natural occurrences of panic attacks, in fact panic attacks are feared by a lot of people all over the world. They are in the notion that they have incurred a severe disease that cannot be cured. However, there is another kind of panic attacks that most people do not want to have. Some people would rather have the usual panic attack instead of this other kind of panic attack. This other form of panic attack is the panic attack while sleeping, sleeping panic attacks are often rare to happen.

However, sleeping panic attacks is not that different with the normal panic attacks that happen when a person is awake. We know how the normal panic attacks can be very distressing, but suffering from sleeping panic attacks can be even more. At times, the person who is experiencing panic attacks does not usually know what has happened while they expedited the attack.

That person may wake up having a rapid heartbeat and they feel confused or in anxiety. A person suffering from sleeping panic attacks may even wake up in their midst of sleep, and they are then suffering from a full-blown panic attack, they have a feeling of fearful and they are afraid of dying or they might lose their sanity. The Sleeping panic attacks have the possibility to leave the individual a feeling of being confused and distressed, and in time this may even develop a person to fear when going to sleep.

Studies have shown that somewhere between the percentages of 50% to 70% of people who are suffering from panic disorder will also experience at least one or more sleeping panic attacks in their life. The episodes of an occurring panic attack while sleeping is relatively rare; however, there were cases that account about 10% of panic attacks. Those people who are regularly experience these types of panic attacks also have the tendency to experience other sleeping disturbances that includes insomnia and even restless or having a broken sleep.

Sleeping panic attacks has one or more form, but both of that form can be very frightening for a person to experience. One of the ways various ways of sleeping panic attacks can be experienced when an individual eventually wakes up and has the feeling as though he or she is going to have a panic attack. They will experience a rapid heartbeat and a racing pulse; the individual may also have a feeling of confused, disoriented, anxious, and disconnected from the real world.

The other form of sleeping panic attacks is that, when the individual starts to feel consciously experience a panic attack while they are in a deep sleep. This would take form as the conventional panic attack; this is where the individual will experiences a panic attack exactly as if they are awake. Although in some other cases, the sleeping panic attack may take a different form, like grinding the teeth, head pain and the feeling of pressure within the ears. These symptoms are not typically experienced is you are having a panic attack while the person is awake. In some occasion, the person experiencing sleeping panic attacks may be aware that they are asleep, and they may feel that they are struggling to wake up.
