Generalized anxiety disorder is diagnosed if symptoms are present in most days than not for more than six moths.
Generalized anxiety disorder is one of the common anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders are the term covering several different forms of abnormal, pathological anxiety, fear, phobia and nervous condition, which may come on all of a sudden or gradually, over a period of several years and may impair or prevent the pursuing of normal daily routines.
The essential characteristic of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is excessive uncontrollable worry about everyday things. This constant worry affects daily functioning and can cause physical symptoms. GAD is usually difficult to diagnose for it lacks some of the dramatic symptoms, like unprovoked panic attacks, that are seen with other anxiety disorders. To be able to diagnose Generalized Anxiety Disorder, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms must be present more days than not for at least 6 months.
What is the difference between having anxiety, and having generalized anxiety disorder?
Maybe one of the most extended feelings these days is that of anxiety and stress, all this caused mainly by the difficult times we are all passing through in a downturn economy. But for a number of people this common stress can be the trigger to a much more painful state that is known as generalized anxiety disorder, and that can lead the person suffering from this condition to even present panic attacks in a given moment.
But why is that some of us have the propensity to convert a stressful period of our lives into a generalized anxiety disorder that refuses to go away? Some study lines move towards a physiological cause in the brain but there are other schools that are convinced that this anxiety problems originate from the inner functioning of our thinking process, in other words; we have learned to deal with stressful situations in a particular way that with time and the given stressful conditions will make us fall into the swamp of anxious feelings that won’t go away as they do for other persons. We will feel overwhelmed by intrusive thoughts and may even develop some manias.
Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive but unwarranted worries that a person cannot stop having. It may not seem like a serious problem to those that don’t have the problem, but it’s a serious concern for those that do. The symptoms are displayed over an unusually long period of time as opposed to a reasonable period of anxiety immediately leading up to or after a stressful event.
Those afflicted with it will not be able to set aside or suppress their worries even when they realize that the level of their anxiety is much higher than the situation usually warrants.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by persistent, excessive and unrealistic worry about everyday things. This worry goes on every day, possibly all day. People with GAD feel their worrying is beyond their control and can’t be turned “off.” People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) go through the day filled with exaggerated worry and tension, even though there is little or nothing to provoke it. They anticipate disaster and are overly concerned about health issues, money, family problems, or difficulties at work. Sometimes just the thought of getting through the day produces anxiety.
It is a matter of grave concern that over 40 million Americans suffer from mental illness of one kind or the other. Mental Health profession is in great demand here, with more and more people becoming victims of anxiety related disorders. These disorders cripple the people affected by them emotionally, physically and financially. So many lives are turned topsy turvy because of these anxiety disorders.
People affected by generalized anxiety disorder suffer with a variety of concerns. In any other type of anxiety disorder, one can find a very specific root cause for which treatment can be given. But patients of this generalized anxiety disorder suffer from a hugely exaggerated state of fear and worry about everyday activities and normal events. For these patients, everything from upcoming tests to family health can cause great mental agitation. They are obsessed with apprehensions about every small and big problem and tend to create a great fuss about nothing. They get into a greatly disturbed mental state and display physical symptoms of the mental agitation too.
