Panic disorder is one of several anxiety disorders that involve an intense, abrupt and oftentimes debilitating period of discomfort and fear. Panic disorders affect millions of men and women of all ages, and can be triggered by several situations or circumstances, real or imagined.

Gerald Klerman of the World Psychiatric Association and author of the book, ?Panic Anxiety and Its Treatments? points out that there are several DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria that must be fulfilled in order to classify someone as having panic attacks.

First, one or more of the panic attacks must have occurred when the person was exposed to a situation that doesn?t typically cause anxiety. This could be anything from going to the grocery store, watching a movie they?ve already seen, or washing the dishes. The panic attack must also not be triggered by a situation where the person was the center of attention, such as a public speaking event, a birthday party, or other situation where they were the focus of a crowd.

Secondly, four attacks must have occurred within a four-week period, or the person must have experienced persistent fear after having an attack. Symptoms of fear after a panic attack may include difficulty sleeping, extreme paranoia and restlessness.

Third, during a panic attack the person must also have experienced at least four of the following symptoms: trembling or shaking; sweating; shortness of breath; dizziness; depersonalization; numbness or tingling; hot flashes; fear of dying; chest pain or discomfort; accelerated heart rate; nausea; choking; and fear of going crazy.

Fourth, the person must have experienced at least four of the symptoms in increased intensity within 10 minutes of the beginning of the first symptom they noticed they were having during the panic attack. In many cases, this means the person was feeling very out of control, unbalanced, and even confused.

Finally, the possibility that the attack was triggered by caffeine, amphetamines or hyper-thyroidism must be ruled out. Many people experience the symptoms of panic disorder because they have become dependent on over-the-counter stimulants, or have an unaddressed medical condition. If the person is taking supplements or stimulants, they may not fulfill the criteria for panic disorder by a psychiatrist.

Panic disorder is just one of several anxiety disorders that affect millions of people every year. Panic disorder can become a problem in someone?s life if it interferes with social relationships, or limits the person?s ability to work or live a fulfilling life. If you or someone you know is suffering from panic disorder, there are several treatment options available. Nobody has to suffer from the effects of extreme anxiety and panic attacks for the rest of their lives.

Panic disorder treatments may require medical intervention only in extreme cases; most people can make changes to their lifestyle, ensure they are eating a well-balanced diet and getting enough sleep, and learning healthy ways to cope with stress. Some people may also benefit from taking natural supplements that reduce anxiety and help to alleviate some of the symptoms of a panic attack.

People are different and so are the symptoms of any condition including anxiety disorders. However, there’s a general set of signs that can help you learn about the problem, and the following symptoms will make it easier for you to identify anxiety problems.

The feeling of fear and anxiety are nothing strange for most of us, as we all experience anxiety from time to time. Writing an important exam, going to a serious business meeting or attending a job interview – these are just examples of situations where most people experience anxiety. And you certainly remember the emotions and sensations that you go through at moments like these. It’s perfectly normal to experience such things when the circumstances are stimulating such a respond. But things go wrong when anxiety appears for no apparent reason.

Healthcare professionals do not deal with everyday anxiety, but focus on what is known as anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders describe general abnormality in the occurrence of anxiety signs when there is no evident reason for this to happen. Moreover, with anxiety disorders the feelings of dread and fear can be more intense and uncontrollable, taking place much more often than normally. If the condition progresses it can impede the normal activity of an individual and requires immediate treatment.

Anxiety disorders are usually connected with the mechanisms triggering the so called flight or fight response. It is an old physiological mechanism developed during evolution that puts the body into a special mode when there’s a direct or indirect threat to one’s well-being (potential harm, risk of failure, potential humiliation, etc.) This mechanism didn’t change much as the civilization developed, only it began to be triggered by circumstance other than our ancient ancestors faced during their lives. However, when an anxiety disorder develops, this response gets triggered by quite odd circumstances that normally don’t pose any threat at all.

According to the actual situations that trigger this mechanism, doctors distinguish different types of anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, separation anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, agoraphobia, and selective mutism.

The circumstances in which the anxiety is manifested differ from one type of disorder to another, but in general the symptoms are the same:

discomfort in the stomachdiarrheadry mouthincreased heart rate or palpitationschest discomforttroubled breathingdizzinessabnormal urinationdifficulty swallowing

Psychological symptoms that are usually linked to anxiety disorders include:

sleep disordersirritabilityconcentration problemsfear of going crazy or dyingfeeling surreal and inability to control own behavior

Such symptoms can be a serious sign of an anxiety disorder and require adequate treatment. Drugs like Valium can relieve the symptoms and decrease the frequency and intensity of anxiety attacks. However, you should first discuss the use of Valium or any other prescription medications with your doctor.

Anxiety attacks are treatable, so you don’t have to worry about it much. Of course, experiencing anxiety attacks is not very pleasant, but if you go to your doctor and run a course of treatment, these anxiety problems can simply turn into unpleasant memories you have.

Article by John Scott

People are different and even the same health problems can manifest through different signs from one person to another. Fear and anxiety are quite common in our everyday life. It’s very hard to find a person who never experienced anxiety and worry before an important meeting or exam. Remember your feeling before going to a job interview, or simply walking down a dark street in the middle of the night. Anxiety is the most common companion in such situation and it keeps us on alert for things unexpected.

However, normal anxiety does not pose any interest for mental health specialists. Things get dramatic when the anxiety response occurs for no apparent reason and stays for much longer periods of time than it usually does in normal circumstances. If anxiety becomes frequent in its nature and occurs periodically for a long time, it is automatically transferred to the state of a disorder.

Anxiety disorders are generally described as an overwhelming and periodical feeling of anxiety that occurs in situations that otherwise do not pose any danger, and which is persistent for longer periods of time, interfering with everyday activities. An individual suffering from any form of anxiety disorders is unable to control the feelings of dread, fear and worry. And to add injury to insult, people who suffer from anxiety disorders are usually well aware of the fact that their feelings do not have any logic reasons, but are unable to do anything about it.

The most common forms of anxiety disorders include conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, separation anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, social phobia, selective mutism and various types of specific phobia. Different types of anxiety disorders have different symptoms, and even the same disorder can be described differently by two persons suffering from it.

However, the physical signs of an anxiety disorder are pretty much common for all types of disorders. They are described by the triggering of the flight or fight response and are manifested through increased heart rate, faster breathing, adrenaline rush, hypertension and other symptoms.

People suffering from anxiety disorders usually report the following symptoms associated with their conditions:- Abdominal discomfort- Diarrhea- Dry mouth- Rapid heartbeat or palpitations- Tightness or pain in chest- Shortness of breath- Dizziness- Frequent urination- Difficulty swallowing

Psychological symptoms associated with anxiety disorders include:- Sleep disorders- Irritability- Lack of concentration- Fear of going crazy or dying- Feeling unreal and not in control of your behavior

If you experience any of these symptoms you might want to address your doctor for a consultation. Even if it’s a sign of anxiety disorder, it doesn’t automatically allow you to take Valium or any other drugs without prescription. Only your doctor can prescribe the right treatment and dosage. Besides drugs like Valium there are other ways to treat anxiety disorders, and your physician will surely help you select the most effective and optimal treatment course for your problem. Any anxiety disorder can be treated, so keep your worries at bay and go to your doctor when you experience any signs of such conditions.

Article by Denise M. Daniels

A generalized anxiety disorder can be described as excessive worry about every day things, a feeling that leaves behind a lot of tension and lasts for more than 6 months. This tension and anxiety will interfere with one’s way of life such that they are not able to function properly. You spend most of the time worrying; you feel impending doom and are overly anxious about things that would not usually worry you. When left unchecked, generalized anxiety disorders can lead to panic attacks.

Here is how this happens. Panic attacks can generally happen because of a feeling of increased tension and worry in a person. The more you worry, the more your body is convinced that there is some danger, and so starts preparing itself for defence. The typical defence reaction is called fight or flight; the body is getting ready either to fight the enemy, or to run away. It will start to feed the muscles with more energy, the heart will pump a little faster to make sure that more blood is moving amongst the muscles, and the muscles themselves will tighten just in case they have to move into action.

Eventually, a tipping point is reached. All this accumulated energy has to be disposed of. The “enemy” is all the fear and the worry that is bottled up inside the body. Without any warning, the body will suddenly react as though it’s in extreme danger. All the reactions that you would expect in such a situation will manifest; the heart pounds much faster, the muscles will tremble, and the chest will tighten. There is a strong sense of impending doom. The episode lasts for a few minutes and then passes, and it may take a few minutes or even a few days to feel normal again.

Because you are in a state of constant worry, you now have one more thing to worry about: what if I have another panic attack? You will fixate and worry over this to the point where the body starts to prepare all over again to either fight or flee. And then another panic attack occurs, at which point you will now be very worried that something is terribly wrong…

You can see how generalized anxiety disorders can lead to panic attacks, and panic attacks to generalized anxiety disorders. It becomes a vicious cycle and if you don’t stop it, it may end up taking over your life.

There are 2 things that you need to look at here. One is the anxiety disorder. What is causing you to worry endlessly? In many cases, it’s simply the life that we live. We are caught up in things we do that make us unhappy; we are all too eager to please and so small failures are magnified; we never take a break to refresh and restore ourselves.

The other thing is the panic attacks. Sometimes, they can occur for no reason. It’s understandable that someone should worry about what could be causing them, but don’t worry yourself so much that you end up being caught in a spiral of worry that will cause you another attack.

In both cases, you can be helped. Generalized anxiety disorders and panic attacks are today recognized as a medical condition and you can get treated either through therapy or medications, or a combination of both.

You must never ignore any signs that are similar to the ones described here. If you feel yourself worrying excessively, you need to stop and find out what it is. In most of the cases, they are things that you can let go of with little consequence. Sometimes you may find that you want to justify your reasons for being anxious and worried. Ask yourself if whatever is causing you generalized anxiety and panic attacks; is it really worth my health?

Live and Learn: Anxiety Disorder Knowledge

Anxiety disorders are varied and include agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and a number of other medical conditions. Most people do not learn about anxiety disorder normally, so it is important to put effort into learning about anxiety disorders if you or a loved one is diagnosed with one of these medical conditions.

The first place you can start when looking for information about anxiety disorders is, of course, your medical professional. If you think that you may have a problem with anxiety to the point where it is disrupting your life, you should see a doctor immediately and describe your symptoms. Your doctor will run tests and check your health in order to make a diagnosis, and be sure to save enough time during your appointment to ask questions about your anxiety disorder and your treatment options. If you feel rushed, make sure that you make another appointment in order to go over your anxiety disorder. If your doctor seems too rushed to talk to you, you are probably better off finding a new doctor who will make the time to help you.

Once you leave your doctor’s office, don’t go home-hit the library.
An anxiety disorder is a serious mental illness characterized by constant and overwhelming fear and apprehension. While everyone feels nervous from time to time in new or challenging situations, the degree of nervousness suffered by someone with an anxiety disorder is overwhelming and often disabling. Panic and anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders. It’s estimated that one in four Americans will suffer debilitating anxiety during his or her life. The most common types of anxiety disorders are:

1) Generalized anxiety disorder – chronic unrealistic fear and worry that are not focused on any specific thing or situation. This is the most common anxiety disorder among adults.

2) Social anxiety disorder – a fear and avoidance of public embarrassment or disapproval. People with social anxiety are overwhelmingly worried and self conscious in everyday social situations.

3) Obsessive compulsive disorder – involves recurring obsessions (distressing and intrusive thoughts and/or images) and urges to perform repetitive routines or rituals. A common example is someone who obsesses about germs and repetitively washes his or her hands.

4) Post-traumatic stress disorder – evolves out of a traumatic incident such as a sexual assault, war, or natural disaster. PTSD symptoms frequently include anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, anger and depression.

5) Panic disorder – involves brief, unprovoked attacks of terror, accompanied by physical symptoms like shaking, dizziness, heart palpitations, sweating, and trouble breathing.

6) Separation anxiety – excessive and inappropriate feelings or anxiety when separated from a particular person or place. Separation anxiety is a normal part of childhood development, but poses a problem if it occurs in late childhood or adulthood.

7) Specific phobias – An intense and overblown fear and avoidance of a specific thing or situation, such as spiders, bridges, heights, or flying.

While each anxiety disorder has its own unique set of symptoms, they all tend to be characterized by repeated negative thoughts, feelings of fear and uneasiness, nightmares and trouble sleeping, and physical symptoms like nausea, headache, dry mouth, muscle tension, palpitations, cold or sweaty hands and difficulty staying still.

While scientists aren’t sure what causes anxiety disorders, they believe it’s a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including stress and trauma. Anxiety disorders tend to run in families, and are suspected to be connected to an imbalance of the brain chemicals which control mood, much like depression. Caffeine and alcohol contribute to anxiety, as can some over the counter and herbal remedies.

Fortunately, anxiety disorders are among the most treatable of mental health conditions, and are commonly addressed with a combination of medication and therapy. Antidepressant drugs are generally the first medication of choice, in particular SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Depression medication works by affecting the concentration and activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, addressing both anxiety and the depression that so often accompanies it. Some patients may be prescribed an anti anxiety medication such as a benzodiazepine along with their anti depression medications. If necessary, beta blockers may also be prescribed to minimize physical anxiety symptoms such as shaking and a rapid heartbeat.

Combining antidepressant medication with therapy offers the most effective and rapid relief for anxiety disorders. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is generally considered the most appropriate type of psychotherapy. Relaxation therapy is also helpful, and many anxiety sufferers report that they benefit from meditation.

			    About the Author

Lynn feels strongly about access to affordable medicine, and advises that antidepressant drugs from Canada are more affordable. She recommends Big Mountain Drugs as a reliable Canadian pharmacy from which to buy Lexapro 10 mg and buy generic Lexapro.

Article by Candace Martin

Many people think of anxiety disorders as something like a fear of walking into a room full of strangers, or perhaps a strong fear of public speaking. They might recognize a condition like agoraphobia, a fear of leaving the home or going into open spaces, as an anxiety disorder, but don’t think much beyond that. But there are other types of social phobias and disorders that fall into this category, some of which receive very little attention from the general public. And all of them have characteristics that make them difficult either to diagnose or to treat.

Eating disorders may be distantly recognized by most people as having some relation to anxiety, but they are probably more associated in people’s minds with things like peer pressure or obsessive compulsive behavior. But conditions like anorexia, bulimia or binge eating, while they are all associated with eating and a preoccupation with body weight or shape, can sometimes stem from traumatic experiences like child abuse or anxieties produced by family or peer pressure. Disorders that relate to eating behaviors are indeed anxiety disorders. Even if there are also some physical causes, the underlying anxieties are often the trigger for the conditions.

Sometimes an anxiety disorder manifests in very specific phobias, associated either with a traumatic event or a particular type of activity. One of those is the phobia about going to school that hits a surprising number of children between the ages of five and about twelve. Of the various sorts of anxiety disorders, this one can take the longest time to recognize and diagnose, because a child’s fears about school are often dismissed as unimportant. Yet a lack of diagnosis could result in adverse consequences for many years.

While a panic disorder is clearly a type of anxiety, it can often be mistaken for other sorts of anxiety disorders. It can simply stand on its own, meaning that finding a cause might be difficult, since panic attacks seem to come spontaneously without being obviously connected to anything. There are difficulties with all three of these disorders. With eating problems, there may be no discoverable root cause, while a phobia about school might not even get diagnosed. And panic attacks may seem to flood in from nowhere. Living with an anxiety disorder is challenging enough, but some disorders can be more challenging than others.

Sometimes anxiety disorders are hard to diagnose, and while the symptoms may suggest one type of condition, the problem is really a different one altogether. The more obscure or tricky disorders give doctors a run for their money, as they try to figure out exactly what’s wrong.

Social anxiety is hard to overcome and most of the suggestions you get just does not function. But you’ll be able to eliminate social anxiety completely and it is not tough to do. You just need to know the trigger and then alter it.

If you’re searching for information about anxiety disorders symptoms, you will find the below related article extremely helpful. It offers a refreshing perspective that is very related to anxiety disorders symptoms and in some manner related to anxiety disorders symptoms, anxieties, anxieties or extreme anxiety disorder. It isn’t the same old kind of information which you will find elsewhere online relating to anxiety disorders symptoms.

Talking to someone is one of the best approaches to overcome your anxiety. Getting together with your family and pals, even your fellow patrons at Starbucks, and talking about what you might be feeling can be helpful. Should you can’t talk to an individual, attempt writing a letter or visiting an proper Web chat room.

I’ve just read your 9 suggestions about dealing with anxiety. I’ve found since I’ve been going by means of early menopause that I get very anxious and have had a few panic attacks when my heart has been pounding, I’ve been sweating and believed that some thing awful was going to happen. I get very anxious of folks. I was abused as a child by someone who ought to have been setting me an example and because of that, I begin feeling anxious when I’m in a crowd. Trust is something alien and I’m cautious of everyone.

BREATHER — As you pause on reading this write-up I hope it has so far provided you with insightful information related to anxiety disorders symptoms. Even if it hasn’t so far, the remainder will, whether your interest is anxiety disorders symptoms directly or other related angle like anxiety disorders symptoms, anxieties, anxieties or extreme anxiety disorder.

Along those exact same lines, many individuals battling depression or anxiety have the added complication of stomach or intestinal problems as a result of the anxiety. Our brains and gastrointestinal tracts are connected far beyond what a lot of people would imagine and one profoundly effects the other (which is why the GAPS Diet is so successful in battling emotional difficulties!) Be additional kind to your digestive system and consider adding probiotics (especially if you have frequent diarrhea) or digestive enzymes. Food preparation can make a large difference too. I wish I knew at the time how soothing bone broths could be to your stomach and how simply the nutrients from it are absorbed.

You need to have a safe place to go whenever you have to if your Anxiety is severe, particularly for those who have Panic Disorder and Social Phobia. If your host understands, your safe location may be a bedroom or home office. Failing that, you may retreat to a bathroom or even your car. Do not be embarrassed to obtain away from the party to pull oneself together! Realizing that you simply have a secure place might mean that you simply never need to use it.

It was intriguing to find that lots of people, oblivious of their background, found this write-up regarding anxiety disorders symptoms and other anxiety disorders symptoms, anxieties, anxieties, and even extreme anxiety disorder helpful.

However, when we pay an excessive amount of attention to our tension, we compound our be concerned and misery and this causes us to attempt harder to avoid stress. This, in turn, brings with it much more secondary anxiety. As this takes place, we are developing a panic attack. The bottom line is, a panic attack will by no means get off the ground with out secondary anxiety and whether or not or not secondary anxiety occurs is up to us.

Do you often feel nervous or apprehensive and worry that there is something wrong with you. It is possible that you are suffering from an anxiety disorder and don’t even realize it. There are physical symptoms as well as emotional signs and symptoms. Here we are going to go over those symptoms as well as go over the main types of anxiety disorders. Understanding and recognizing the signs and symptoms of anxiety will help you get the treatment you need.

Emotional Symptoms

Many people are aware of some of the main symptoms associated with anxiety disorders which are fear and worry, but there are other symptoms as well. These can include a feeling of uneasiness, dread or apprehension even over the littlest of things. You may also have problems concentrating or you may avoid things out of fear. You may also experience feelings of restlessness or edginess, irritability, self conscious and insecure as well as feelings of nervousness. People that are dealing with anxiety issues also fear that they are going to die or that they are crazy. Understand that it isn’t one of these feelings, but a combination of many of them.

Physical Symptoms

Anxiety has physical manifestations as well. You may be experiencing chest pain, palpitations, cold and clammy hands, shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness. These are the common physical symptoms of a person having an anxiety attack. The severity of your symptoms can and will vary. If you find that you are experiencing a number of the above mentioned signs and symptoms then call your doctor to discuss the possibility of having anxiety issues.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

You also need to know that there isn’t just one anxiety disorder, there are actually five main anxiety disorders. The first is a Generalized Anxiety Disorder and this disorder is characterized by chronic anxiety, exaggerated tension and worry. And these feelings can be provoked by nothing.

Obsessive-compulsive Disorder is another type of anxiety disorder and is characterized by recurrent, repetitive behaviors and unwanted thoughts. This can include hand washing, checking or counting in hopes that you are going to prevent something bad from happening.

Panic disorders are also anxiety disorders. A panic disorder is characterized by repeated and unexpected episodes of intense fear and this fear is then linked to many of the above mentioned physical manifestations.

Most everyone has heard of PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This anxiety disorder is most often developed after a person has under gone traumatic incidents in their life. These incidents include accidents, military combat, natural or human caused disasters and violent personal assaults.

The fifth main type of anxiety disorder is Social Anxiety Disorder. This disorder is characterized by overwhelming feelings of anxiety and extreme feelings of being self conscious in typical everyday social encounters.

When you consider that fact that 12 million people in America are dealing with anxiety disorders, it is worth making yourself aware of the signs and symptoms associated with the various anxiety disorders. The good news is that if you do suffer from an anxiety disorder there is treatment available to you and there are support groups to help you deal with your symptoms. Talk with your doctor.

Question by Heather C: How do anxiety disorders and personality disorders differ from an adjustment disorder?
In an anxiety disorder there can be an identifiable stressor – ex. social anxiety and social situations
Borderline personality – a stressor can be an abusive relationship. How do these things differ?

Best answer:

Answer by Andrea
a personality disorder is when normal personality traits become so exaggerated that they become a hindrance to normal functioning. ie: it’s good to be able to lean on people and ask their advise at times but it is dysfunctional to ALWAYS have someone make all of your decisions for you… even what you eat for breakfast…. that become Dependent personality disorder…. normal trait to an unhealthy extreme. An anxiety disorder has symptoms that are triggerer by specific events but are not a part of the person’s personality….. An adjustment disorder is when you have an abnormal reaction to something that should be easy to adjust to. like going to college is easy for some.. more difficult for others… but a few people just cannot deal with the adjustment and become severely deperssed, anxious, etc… it is limited to a single situation and goes away if removed from that situation.

Panic Disorders

Hazel’s symptoms suggest that she experienced a panic attack – an episode of acute and overwhelming apprehension or terror. During panic attacks, the individual feels certain that something dreadful is about to happen. This feeling is usually accompanied by such symptoms as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, perspiration, muscle tremors, faintness, and nausea. The symptoms result from excitation of the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system (See Chapter 2) and are the same reactions that an individual experiences when extremely frightened. During severe panic attacks, the person fears that he or she will die.

As many as 40 % of young adults have occasional panic attacks, especially during times of stress (King Gullone, Tonge, & Ollendick, 1993). For most of these people, the panic attacks are annoying but isolated events that do not change how they live their lives. When panic attacks become a common occurrence and the individual begins to worry about having attacks, he or she may receive a diagnosis of panic disorder. Panic disorder is relatively rare: Only about 1.5% to 3.5% of the population will ever develop a panic disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Usually panic disorder appears sometime between late adolescence and the mid 30s. With out treatment, panic disorder tends to become chronic (Weiss & Last, 2001).

Panic-like symptoms may take a different form across cultures. People from Latino cultures, particularly in Caribbean, sometimes experience a sudden rush of anxiety symptoms known as ataque de nervios. The symptoms of ataque include trembling, feelings of out of control, sudden crying, screaming uncontrollably, verbal and physical aggression, and sometimes seizure-like or fainting episodes and suicidal gesture (Lopez & Guarnaccia, 2000). When ataque de nervios comes out of the blue, it is often attributed to the stresses of daily living or to spiritual causes. A study of Puerto Ricans after the 1985 floods found that 16% of the victims reported experiencing an ataque (Guarnaccia Canino, Rubio-tipec, & Bravo, 1993).

People with panic disorder may believe that they have a life-threatening illness, such as heart disease or susceptibility to stroke, even after such illnesses have been ruled out by medical examinations. They may go from one physician to anther, searching for the one who can diagnose their ailments. They may also believe that they are “going crazy” or “losing control”. If their symptoms go untreated, they may become depressed and demoralized.

About a third to half of people with panic disorder also develop agoraphobia (American Psychiatric Association). People with agoraphobia fear any place where they might be trapped or unable to receive help in an emergency. The emergency they most often fear is having a panic attack. The term agoraphobia comes from the ancient Greek words meaning “fear of the marketplace.” People with agoraphobia fear being in a busy , crowded place such as a mall. They may also fear being in tightly enclosed spaces from which it can be difficult to escape, such as a bus, elevator, or subway, or being alone in wide-open spaces such as a meadow or a deserted beach. All of these places are frightening for people with agoraphobia because if a panic attack or some other emergency occurred, it would be very difficult for them to escape or get help. They may also fear that they will embarrass themselves when others see that they are having a panic attack, even though other people usually cannot tell when a person is having a panic attack.

People with agoraphobia avoid all the places they fear. They significantly curtail their activities, remaining in a few “safe” places, such as the area within a few blocks of home. Sometimes they can venture into “unsafe” places if a trusted family member or friend accompanies them. If they attempt to enter “unsafe” places on their own, however, they may experience a great deal of general anxiety beforehand and have a full panic attack when in the unsafe place. Hazel, whom we met earlier in the chapter, provides an example:

Hazel continued to have panic attacks every few days sometimes on the same street where she had the first panic attack, but increasingly in places where she’d never had a panic attack before. It seemed she was especially likely to have a panic attack if there were lots of people standing around her, and she became confused about how she would get out of the crowd if she began to panic. The only place Hazel had not had any panic attacks was in her apartment. She began to spend more and more time in her apartment and refused to go any place she had previously had a panic attack. After a few months, she had called in sick to work so often that she was fired. Yet, Hazel could not bring herself to leave her apartment at all. She had here groceries delivered to her so she wouldn’t have to go out to get them. She would see friends only if they would come to her apartment. Hazel’s savings were becoming depleted, however, because she had lost her job. Hazel began looking for a job that she could do from her apartment.

Although people can develop agoraphobia without panic attacks, the vast majority of people with agoraphobia do have panic attacks or panic-like symptoms in social situations (Craske & Barlow, 2001). Agoraphobia usually develops within a year of the onset of recurrent panic attacks. Obviously, the symptoms of agoraphobia can severely interfere with the ability to function in daily life. People with agoraphobia often turn to alcohol and other drugs to cope with their symptoms. Fortunately, we have learned a great deal about the causes of panic and agoraphobia in recent years.

Generalized anxiety disorders (GAD) is a familiar disorder now characterized by irrational fears and worries about certain things in our daily lives. Up to five percent of the population suffers from this sort of condition.

Not a single person can claim they never worry. It is entirely normal to worry about your employment and your family unit. Worrying in itself is not a problem until it becomes so exaggerated that you can not function. Family, friends, spouses, health issues, finances, death, and work become major sources of uneasiness for those individuals suffering from GAD. Extreme anxiousness tends to rule a person’s life and may last for up to six months.

As if having these uncontrollable feelings is not tough enough, GAD often includes physical signs such as sweating, headaches, muscle tension, and difficulty falling asleep.

The long list of disorders related to fear includes anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorder is often manifested in fear episodes, panic attacks, and hysteria. The symptoms for anxiety disorder may be common among the affected individuals but what triggers an anxiety disorder for an individual may not necessarily be the same for another individual. Anxiety disorder usually develops from phobias, extreme fear, pain, and stressful events.

Anxiety disorders are also linked to several physiological reactions. If an individual experiences heart palpitation, muscle spasms, sudden fatigue, and persistent headaches, he or she may develop an anxiety disorder later on. When an anxiety disorder develops in an individual, the normal functioning of the affected individual is disrupted. Thus, individuals suffering from anxiety disorders are advised to stay calm and stay still or stay in just one location when the anxiety attack occurs. These individuals should also be carefully monitored and observed. In treating anxiety disorder consulting an expert or another person on the individual’s capability to resume what he or she has been doing earlier is also advisable. To prevent any immediate recurrence of the attack, the person should rest at least a day after the occurrence of the anxiety attack.

Anxiety disorders share numerous similar attributes with other psychological disorders. However, anxiety disorders also have distinct descriptions. Phobias are often attributed to unresolved childhood fears. Various phobias have already been identified, according to their corresponding trigger. Most phobias are also deemed as irrational or illogical. But, despite their irrationality and absurdity, these phobias still cause intense fear and anxiety to the affected individual. Even situations or objects that are usually neutral can even lead to extreme fear.

Some individuals may even develop phobias about cars. Likewise, for individuals suffering from anxiety disorders, the cause of the anxiety may already be illogical but he or she still could not control or stop his or her anxiety when confronted with that particular trigger. An individual with an anxiety disorder may find it difficult to control his or her extreme anxiety in attending a social gathering or party.

Anxiety disorder can be managed through different approaches. Cognitive and behavioral therapies are combined by psychologists or psychiatrists to effectively treat anxiety disorders. An individual suffering from anxiety disorders may need to undertake therapies for several sessions facilitated by a competent psychologist or psychiatrist. The overall aim of these therapies is to eliminate the root cause of the anxiety attack. The prevalent thoughts of the individual would be analyzed, discussed and processed in order to facilitate a healthier and more positive chain of thought that would prevent any recurrence of anxiety disorders.

Heavy medications are also used in treating anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders manifest through the symptoms that can be cured by prescribed drugs. However, when medication intake becomes excessive more than necessary, the medication intake may lead to substance abuse and drug dependency. Thus, lesser experts would usually recommend taking psychological drugs.

It is ordinary to experience anxiety from time to time, especially if you are under a lot of stress. But, if the anxiety that you’re feeling bothers your everyday routines, relationships and makes it difficult to take pleasure in life, you may be experiencing general anxiety disorders. It is probable to build up the problem as a youth or as an adult. The condition has likely symptoms as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other sorts of anxiety, but they are all varied disorders. Being together with this disorder can be a long-term struggle. Usually, in most cases, it gets better with drugs or psychotherapy. Creating changes in lifestyle, learning coping skills and utilizing relaxation techniques can also be of assistance.

There may be occasions when your uncertainties do not entirely devour you, but you still experience anxiety even when there is no clear reason. Example, you may experience severe concern about your safety or that of your special someone, or you may have a wide sense that something unlikely is about to occur. General anxiety disorders usually starts at a young age, and the signs may widen more slowly than in other types of anxiety disorders. It is a long-term disorder that needs ongoing therapy. Special management are accessible that will not make you experience anxiety at most times. But you are always liable to becoming worried, especially when life becomes worrying.

General anxiety disorders mostly happen together with other mental health disorders, such as other types of anxiety disorders, substance-abuse disorders and mood disorders. It most usually happens with major depression. The condition is best treated with a mixture of some type of counseling and medication therapy. Counseling can tackle the main causes of anxiety and give ways on how to deal with it. Anti-anxiety medications such as benzodiazepines are frequently prescribed. But, long-term usage of this medication can direct to drug dependence if discontinued. It must be slowly lessened rather than stopped immediately. The effects that benzodiazepines have usually outweigh any gentle side effects and the probability of drug dependence.

Buspirone is a different anti-anxiety medication efficient for some individuals with general anxiety disorders. The results of the drug do not direct to drug dependence. But, Buspirone may 2 weeks or more to begin working, compared to benzodiazepines, which start to work within one hour. Some antidepressants such as venlafaxine, paroxetine and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are also successful for the management of the disorder. These medications begin to relieve anxiety immediately, sometimes after a couple of days. Primarily, individuals may be given a benzodiazepine and an antidepressant. When the antidepressant begins to work, the dose of benzodiazepine is lessened and then discontinued.

Herbal merchandises such as kava and valerian may have anti-effects, though their success and safety for managing anxiety disorders such as general anxiety disorders may need further study. Cognitive behavior therapy has been proven to be helpful for the condition. With this treatment, individuals learn to know when their thinking is indistinct, to manage their indistinct thinking, and to change their behavior accordingly. Relaxation, yoga, meditation exercise and biofeedback may also be of some assistance. All of these can aid and improve to treat the disorder. This would then create complete change in the life of the person having the disorder.

The treatment of anxiety disorders in Africa is not as advanced as it is in the advanced countries.

One reason is misconception by the general public. Mental problems are generally looked down on by the people. It is commonly believed that one has been bewitched and no cure exists for such a person. The level of stigmatization can reach aberrational levels.

Note that people who suffer from panic disorders can not be classified as “mad”. They simply conclude such a person has issues, some serious ones!

Rather than seek orthodox treatment, many simply prefer to take the sufferer to a medicine man!
This merely worsens the problem. Many are not aware of orthodox treatments and even when aware either cost or access to treatment acts as barriers. There are simply more pressing problems.

Another challenge is that many sufferers are not aware that their condition can be treated. They live in this darkness perpetually. Remember, that literacy levels are low and mental health workers few.

On the part of the mental health practitioners, treating anxiety disorders can also be a challenge.

The psychiatrist prescribes medicines such as Zoloft or generic versions to their patients which have positive benefits.

Nevertheless, the psychiatrist is usually not as acquainted with panic disorders as his western counterparts as only few Africans ever consult practitioners. This is a continent where many are poor and therefore have more pressing needs.

This ignorance can be a challenge for the psychiatrist and psychologist need to appreciate the sufferer’s condition. Due to encountering little or no patients, he may simply follow a textbook routine.

African psychologists may not also appreciate panic disorders because the sufferer may be calm in their presence. Many with panic disorders sound very intelligent in the presence of their psychologist and to one unfamiliar with the condition, find very little wrong. The reason for the calmness is because he the sufferer can talk openly about his condition. It is the stress of masking the symptoms or trying to be perfect that triggers off an attack.

The psychologist may also not be familiar with causes of anxiety disorders which is crucial to treatment. He may for instance see the need for the sufferer to be independent but may not realize the importance.

It is a pity because as Africa develops and more people move to the cities, social phobia will be on the increase.

Now more than ever, Africa needs to produce sufficient mental health practitioners to treat anxiety disorders properly.

There are many types of anxiety disorders and many types of therapies for them. A common type of anxiety disorder is a panic disorder which can result in panic attacks.

These attacks are extreme and happen very suddenly. When a person suffers from them, the person usually starts to worry about when and where they will have another one. Consequently, they start to avoid situations and places where they have had these attacks.

Countless experts agree that combining two specific types of therapies results in the greatest assistance for these sufferers. These two types of therapies are cognitive therapies and behavioral therapies.

Cognitive therapies change the way an individual thinks about the attacks. These therapies help them replace unnecessary, negative thoughts with more realistic, positive thoughts. They also help the person comprehend that they are not going crazy and that the attacks will not kill them.

Behavioral therapies expose the sufferer to the attack symptoms in a controlled setting in order to help them see that the physical symptoms do not always turn into a full panic attack. These therapies help the person take manageable, small steps toward the situation or action they fear. The person soon learns not to focus on the upcoming action or situation – or possible consequences.

Each individual will work through the therapies at their own pace. Some may be able to work through them fairly quickly, while many others will need a lot more time.

As long as sufferers get professional help, stick with their therapies and learn more about their panic disorder, the therapies can make a huge difference.

Treatment for panic disorders falls into the categories of drug or non- drug therapies, and in this article we concentrate on non-drug treatments. If you have ever experienced a panic attack you will have some idea of the sheer terror that panic can induce, and anyone whose life is punctuated by chronic anxiety or panic disorder will be eager to find a cure.

Natural or non-drug methods of controlling symptoms of panic disorder generally fall into two categories:

*Ways to control symptoms.

In this category would be included methods such as relaxation techniques, yoga, and meditation. These techniques help to counteract the stress of anxiety states, and help you to feel generally happier and more at peace. When you are having a panic attack, the breathing tends to become shallow and rapid – hyperventilation. This in turn is responsible for some of the symptoms that are experienced, such as light-headedness and a tingling sensation. Deep breathing can help reduce the severity of a panic attack, as can breathing into a paper bag (yes, really!)

*Ways to try to stop the problem altogether

Methods that focus on changing the way you think about panic attacks. This in turn will change your bodily response to whatever it is that normally sets off an attack. For example, say you had a panic attack while sitting on a bus, and avoided going on a bus again for fear that you took another attack. What is the worst that would really happen? You would not be stuck on the bus – you could get off at the next stop and walk for a while. Once the trigger situation has lost its fear, the panic will disappear.

This sort of treatment is called cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT and is one of the most successful methods of treatment for panic disorders.

Exposure therapy and hypnotherapy are also used with some success.

What if I told you there is an exceptionally effective treatment for panic disorders ? This medical condition, anxiety, may occur without a reason, or it is possible that it is caused by a really problem.

Before knowing what to look for, it is important to know what causes panic disorders. Panic disorders are sometimes associated with anxiety attacks. The two are very similar. They are often caused by three main reasons. The first and most common is stress. Stress has become and every going problem especially in America. Although there have been an increasing number of stress relieving methods discovered, stress still manages to get the best out of many people The second most common cause of panic disorders can be traced back to problems with family and friends. If you are highly affected with problems in the relationships then you are prone to having anxiety and panic problems. The third cause could be simple unknown reasons. Sometimes people suffer from panic disorders for no reason. When this is the case the only thing to do is treat the symptoms since the source is unknown.

If you feel as though you may be suffering from panic disorders you should visit your doctor immediately. Since they are a more advanced type of anxiety attacks they can be dangerous if not handled properly. Remember, it is better safe then sorry. Contact your doctor.

It may surprise many people who have spent so much time and money on a seemingly endless round of visits to different doctors seeking to find permanent cure for their embarrassing panic disorder to discover that there are natural cures for panic attacks. These cures are proven and effective natural treatment for panic disorders. This article will highlight some of the proven and effective non-drug approach to cure panic attacks.

Click Here For Natural Cures For Panic Attacks

There are several people who have found relief through hypnosis; and hypnosis as a non-drug treatment approach has already been widely recognized by the American Medical Association since 1958 as a form of natural cure and treatment for cure panic attacks. Hypnosis helps to strengthen the effect of the mind on the body by modifying the way we perceive sensations, narrowly focusing your attention so that you do not become overwhelmed by the symptoms, thereby relaxing you physically and emotionally.

The other natural cures for panic attacks involve the use of humor. Laughter has been known to help reduce stress and anxiety and now it can be use to send your panic attacks away from your life forever. This approach uses humor visualization where a sufferer will view himself or herself in a situation that makes him laugh uncontrollably. Whenever panic symptoms arise, the sufferer puts himself in the state that makes them to laugh. Humor replaces the distressing emotions of an attack and, if the humor leads to outright laughter, it changes the physiological responses of the attack. When you are in a state of anxiety your serum cortisol or stress hormone level increases; laughter will reduce the cortisol levels to a healthy state.

Another natural cures for panic attacks research has proven to work in naturally treating panic attacks and panic disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy. This is an effective treatment of choice. For me, it is more effective than medication, and unlike medication, you do not experience any sign of relapse after the treatment. Best of all, there are no side effects.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for panic attacks will not require a very lengthy treatment approach. In an average of 8 to 14 weeks, you will be completely panic-free.

Why not take advantage of the natural cures for panic attacks now and free yourself from the dangers of antidepressant drugs currently used for the treatment of panic attacks by most hospitals. Click here to learn more.

There are actually a few different panic attacks causes but the main cause is stress, with other possible causes including anxiety, depression, chemical imbalance in the brain and even genetics. Whatever the cause of your panic disorder, you will be glad to know that it can be controlled. Stress The biggest contributor to panic attacks and it seems in this fast world that people do seem to be under much more stress than in previous years. Many people will deal with stress every day and it doesn’t really bother them too much, they will continue along with life without a problem. For others though, they just don’t handle stress very well and this can lead to depression, anxiety and yes you guessed it – panic attacks. It is these people who do not handle stress well that need to take action to deal with stress more effectively. Simple steps like exercise, good diet, fresh air and plenty of water will go a long way in helping your body to deal with stress better. Yoga and meditation is also very helpful in dealing with stress. Once you learn to deal with stress more effectively you can then control your other emotions and prevent these anxiety and panic disorders from happening. When a person first has a panic attack, the attack itself causes a lot of stress and fear, which or course then leads to more panic attacks, and so a viscious cycle begins. These feelings are so overwhelming that it feels like there is nothing you can do to prevent them, but there is. You can stop panic attacks from happening, but you need to be determined to do it. With a bit of help, you can change these feelings and change the way your body deals with anxiety and you can overcome panic disorders completely. The other big cause of panic disorder is the chemical imbalance and this can also be treated. Medications are quite effective in helping with chemical imbalance and there are also natural treatments available to help get that imbalance back into balance. Don’t just accept panic attacks into your life, take action to treat them and overcome them. You deserve to live a happy, panic free life and you can.

You deserve to live a happy and panic free life, so take action today to stop panic attacks for good.

Have you been wondering what is available as treatment for panic disorders? You may want to know why panic attacks come about in the first place and what on earth to do about them. If you are a sufferer you will know just how limiting they can be – you may have to think twice before doing anything at all outside your home. Don’t be a slave to panic. Read this article to find out more.

Panic attacks can happen to anyone – male or female, young or old. If they occur just once or twice they do not cause a big problem in the normal running of life, but once they start happening regularly, in different situations, you may start to feel anxious about them happening again, and take steps to avoid such situations. This is called avoidance behavior and you may have a panic disorder.

Situations where avoidance behavior is commonly used include:

Public transport. Buses, trains, airplanes and any other form of transport where there are lots of other people in a confined space tend to bring on panic attacks. The main problem is the perception that there is no way out. Once you start thinking that and becoming uncomfortable and agitated, the panic attack is starting.

Driving in your own car. Fear of having an accident is often the trigger, and as soon as the thought is planted in your mind, the panic rushes in.

Large shops and public places. Again the fear is generally of not being able to get out, and sufferers will often be more comfortable as long as they know they are near to an exit. As soon as that comfort is taken away they will start to become agitated, and again the panic cycle will start.

These are just examples of a few of the most common places where panic attacks occur. However if you suffer from severe panic disorder with avoidance behavior then life will be full of small things that tend to bring on attacks, and daily activities will be reduced to the absolute minimum that you can get away with so that you don’t have to go out or interact with other people.

It doesn’t have to be like this.

A choice of treatment for panic disorders and anxiety is available. Medication can help with the acute effects and can help to reduce the number of attacks. Self help techniques such as breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation can be useful. Some people have also found hypnosis to be useful.

But the best technique for long-term cure is CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy. Techniques used in this therapy help sufferers to identify how their thinking affects their panic attacks, and how changing the way you think can take away the panic.

What if I told you there is an exceptionally effective treatment for panic disorders available only a click away?

There are a variety of different methods for treating panic disorders available. They fall into two basic categories – talking therapies and drug based therapies. If you suffer from panic attacks or anxiety and are looking for a way to eliminate them you should take a look at all the options that are out there. What works for one person may not work for you so if you try something and it doesn’t work don’t stop looking. Instead, try something else. Here is a run down on the treatments that work for panic disorders that give the best results and have relatively low or no side effects.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

One of the most popular treatments for panic attacks and anxiety, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is done with a qualified professional.
