These anxiety sessions may lead to other situations as when a person refuses to leave the house for fear of a panic attack. This is fundamentally the answer to what is a anxiety disorder.Anxiety disorders can impact close to ten % of the population at any given time. Ladies are almost twice as likely as men to encounter anxiety attacks, especially females aged 45-54, while the gap in between males and females narrows sharply in older age groups.Anxiety disorders are more typically related with depression than any other disorder. 50 percent the individuals with a depressive condition also report some form of anxiety. In anxiety disorders individuals experience frequent, intensive and irrational anxiety. The various kinds of anxiety disorders are:? Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)· Social Anxiety/Social Phobia· Panic Anxiety Disorder· Agoraphobia· Obsessive-compulsive Disorder· Post-traumatic Stress DisorderWhat is a anxiety disorder? Well| here are the descriptions of the previously mentioned.Generalized Anxiety Disorder, typically known as GAD, is a persistent, irrational, uncontrollable anxiety with extreme worry about specific occasions or activities in every day life. GAD is deemed to be the most common psychological anxiety disorder that affects older adults.Social anxiety, also recognized as social phobia, is the strong, irrational, mind-boggling fear of specific social situations. Panic anxiety disorder is the condition of regular attacks of intensive fear and feelings of doom or terror. When the attack transpires, the sufferer could really feel like he or she is about to have a heart attack, feeling symptoms such as chest pains, palpitations, profuse sweating, clammy hands, among many others. Whatever the nature of the panic anxiety attack, it will cause a set of very disturbing symptoms often causing| the sufferer to fear having another attack – a fear which can in turn cause them to actually have one.Agoraphobia is the fear of being in or circumstances from which escape may possibly be difficult. Individuals with agoraphobia usually find themselves unable to depart their because of their overpowering fear that the anxiety attack might occur again.Obsessive-compulsive disorder is marked by recurrent obsessions which are persistent thoughts or ideas, and compulsions which are acts performed in response to an obsession. These compulsions are extreme and they interfere with a individuals standard development as a social being and with everyday existence. Such compulsions may possibly be – abnormal washing and cleaning; excessive checking and rechecking of things like on-off switches, locked doors, etc; always putting things in order and organizing things; violent undesirable ideas of hurting themselves or a loved one; paralysed fear of always needing things and hence never throwing things out etc. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is marked by flashbacks and recurrent thoughts following a person experiences or is exposed to a terrifying traumatic occasion. The traumatic events leading to PTSD have been defined as when a individual experiences or witnesses events that involve death or the threat of death or a significant injury of self or others. The definition goes on to state that the person’s response was one of intense emotions of fear and helplessness.Once you have decided the type or sort of anxiety that you believe you are suffering from, you will need to immediately make an appointment with a physician in order to properly be diagnosed.Keep in mind, you do not have to live with anxiety!

Article by John C Allen

While there are a number of risk factors for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), there is one common thread for all those who suffer from it: real trauma. While not everyone who lives through a traumatic situation develops PTSD, our understanding of PTSD has evolved over the last few decades – and so has our understanding of the impact different kinds of trauma can have on our minds and bodies.

Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, flashbacks, exhaustion, and more extreme effects, have shown up throughout history and are often connected with war and conflict. Our modern understanding of PTSD was formed in the 1970s after the Vietnam War; soldiers continued to experience life-impacting effects long after they came home.

However, it’s important to recognize that it can be caused by other significant events, too. PTSD has been diagnosed in people who have survived natural disasters, acts of violence like shootings or rape, childhood neglect or physical abuse, and in some cases being threatened with violence.<h2>Is it Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?</h2>There are six criteria for diagnosing PTSD:

Exposure to a traumatic event.”This must have involved both (a) loss of “physical integrity”, or risk of serious injury or death, to self or others, and (b) a response to the event that involved intense fear, horror or helplessness (or in children, the response must involve disorganized or agitated behavior).”Persistent re-experiencing.Persistent avoidance and emotional numbing.Persistent symptoms of increased arousal not present before.”These are all physiological response issues, such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, or problems with anger, concentration, or hypervigilance.”Duration of symptoms for more than a month.Significant impairment. If the other criteria are met but the symptoms haven’t been around for more than a month, a diagnosis of acute stress reaction – a variation of PTSD – might be given.<h2>Getting help</h2>If someone is experiencing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, treatment can only begin once he or she has been removed from the crisis situation. This includes ongoing trauma, like ongoing domestic or community abuse, but can also refer to other conditions – treatment for drug or alcohol use, for example.

Once in a safe environment, a detailed evaluation will be conducted and a treatment plan created that meets the needs of that individual. Treatments can include cognitive-behavioral therapy, coping strategies, and medication.<h2>Finding more information</h2>Treatment for someone with PTSD includes education for their family and loved ones. As explained in our information about PTSD: ” Understanding that PTSD is a medically-recognized anxiety disorder that occurs in normal individuals under extremely stressful conditions is essential for effective treatment.

Is a condition where the person feels extremely worried or anxious on a regular basis. Exaggerated feelings of worry or anxiety are normal in some situations, but for people who have generalized anxiety disorder or related conditions, the feelings are out of proportion with the situation at hand.

People with generalized anxiety disorder are unable to stop worrying about everyday events and situations, and may become overly concerned with money, work, school, health or their families. They spend their days in constant worry or anxiety over certain situations, and they often end up feeling worn out, depressed, sad, and cannot enjoy relationships or social activities.

There is no known root cause of generalized anxiety disorder, but doctors and researchers conjecture that there are several factors that contribute to the development of this anxiety problem. Family history often plays an important role in the development of generalized anxiety disorder. If a person’s parent were constant “worriers”, they probably grew up in an environment where fear and anxiety were part of everyday life.

Environmental factors can also be a cause of anxiety disorders. Stressful events such as abuse, divorce, moving, changing jobs or losing a loved one can trigger real fear, dread and anxiety, but this can worsen if it is left unaddressed. The person can get into the habit of feeling difficult feelings all over again whenever they are stressed, and this can perpetuate the cycle of anxiety. MedicineNet.com reports that many people turn to food, nicotine or caffeine to manage their feelings, but this often makes the situation worse.

Finally, brain chemistry may play a role in the development of generalized anxiety disorder. People who have anxiety problems typically have abnormal levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, which can effect the types of messages the brain is sending or receiving. This means the person may be experiencing a fear response from only a mildly stressful situation, and will start to link the mildly stressful situation to that negative experience. In reality, the brain is just sending the wrong type of message to the body, so the person perceives what is happening to them in the wrong way.

Correcting neurotransmitter imbalances is possible by eating certain foods and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In some extreme cases, medication or natural supplements may also be recommended. It’s important to understand that generalized anxiety disorder is quite common, and more women experience the symptoms and effects of this disorder than men.Even though family history and environmental factors may not change, there are several ways to reduce the effects of GAD and other anxiety disorders. Making healthy food choices, getting enough rest, maintaining a regular exercise schedule, and controlling stress in a healthy way can help to reduce feelings of fear, worry and overwhelm on a regular basis.

Lifestyle and behavior modification may be the best option for the millions of people suffering from daily anxiety problems, and may be necessary when generalized anxiety disorder symptoms and related anxiety problems are interfering with daily life. The Emotional Impact of Anxiety Disorders

affect millions of men and women every year, and most people experience a combination of emotional and physical symptoms depending on the severity of their condition. Anxiety disorders range from generalized, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias and social anxiety , but almost all have the same spectrum of emotional symptoms that have significant effects on the person’s well-being and emotional health. The primary symptoms associated with all anxiety is excessive, even irrational fear or worry about a particular situation, place or thing. However, the following emotional symptoms can also be present, and can occur frequently, or become a part of the person’s personality:1. Anticipating the worst. Most people suffering from an anxiety disorder are always preparing for the worst, and expect negative things to happen. This can perpetuate a cycle of negative thinking, and may lead to depression, more anxiety and other problems.2. Agitation or restlessness.

Often leave the person feeling uneasy or uncomfortable in certain situations. In some cases, the sufferer may experience constant restlessness even when trying to relax at home. This is because they have gotten into the habit of maintaining a heightened sense of awareness, and may have become particularly sensitive to even the slightest changes in their environment.3. Feeling jumpy or tense on a regular basis. Most people who have even the mildest forms of anxiety disorder will feel as though they are always on the edge, or have to “walk on eggshells.”

Article by Denise M. Daniels

A generalized anxiety disorder can be described as excessive worry about every day things, a feeling that leaves behind a lot of tension and lasts for more than 6 months. This tension and anxiety will interfere with one’s way of life such that they are not able to function properly. You spend most of the time worrying; you feel impending doom and are overly anxious about things that would not usually worry you. When left unchecked, generalized anxiety disorders can lead to panic attacks.

Here is how this happens. Panic attacks can generally happen because of a feeling of increased tension and worry in a person. The more you worry, the more your body is convinced that there is some danger, and so starts preparing itself for defence. The typical defence reaction is called fight or flight; the body is getting ready either to fight the enemy, or to run away. It will start to feed the muscles with more energy, the heart will pump a little faster to make sure that more blood is moving amongst the muscles, and the muscles themselves will tighten just in case they have to move into action.

Eventually, a tipping point is reached. All this accumulated energy has to be disposed of. The “enemy” is all the fear and the worry that is bottled up inside the body. Without any warning, the body will suddenly react as though it’s in extreme danger. All the reactions that you would expect in such a situation will manifest; the heart pounds much faster, the muscles will tremble, and the chest will tighten. There is a strong sense of impending doom. The episode lasts for a few minutes and then passes, and it may take a few minutes or even a few days to feel normal again.

Because you are in a state of constant worry, you now have one more thing to worry about: what if I have another panic attack? You will fixate and worry over this to the point where the body starts to prepare all over again to either fight or flee. And then another panic attack occurs, at which point you will now be very worried that something is terribly wrong…

You can see how generalized anxiety disorders can lead to panic attacks, and panic attacks to generalized anxiety disorders. It becomes a vicious cycle and if you don’t stop it, it may end up taking over your life.

There are 2 things that you need to look at here. One is the anxiety disorder. What is causing you to worry endlessly? In many cases, it’s simply the life that we live. We are caught up in things we do that make us unhappy; we are all too eager to please and so small failures are magnified; we never take a break to refresh and restore ourselves.

The other thing is the panic attacks. Sometimes, they can occur for no reason. It’s understandable that someone should worry about what could be causing them, but don’t worry yourself so much that you end up being caught in a spiral of worry that will cause you another attack.

In both cases, you can be helped. Generalized anxiety disorders and panic attacks are today recognized as a medical condition and you can get treated either through therapy or medications, or a combination of both.

You must never ignore any signs that are similar to the ones described here. If you feel yourself worrying excessively, you need to stop and find out what it is. In most of the cases, they are things that you can let go of with little consequence. Sometimes you may find that you want to justify your reasons for being anxious and worried. Ask yourself if whatever is causing you generalized anxiety and panic attacks; is it really worth my health?

You might generally listen to people say they can be worried and anxious to varying degrees. Some people will say they’re stressed out or that they’ve received a nervous breakdown. Many people say they can be struggling from an anxiety or panic disorder, and even are having panic attacks. Individuals use these phrases interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same thing. Allow’s study what these phrases suggest and what the similarities and variations in between them are.

First let’s have a look at the term anxiety. In the event the name was coined way again in the 1930′s, it absolutely was defined as a general reaction in the physique to any desire for transform. Medically speaking, the phrase indicates incredibly very little as it really is so subjective. It really is tough to define, allow on your own measure. What I may well uncover stressful, you might locate entertaining!

A different lay expression that means very little medically is nervous breakdown. This phrase is normally applied when somebody ceases being able to temporarily function generally soon after a traumatic affair.

The primary precise healthcare expression discussed here is anxiety. Anxiety it medically described as an abnormal and overwhelming feeling of apprehension and dread accompanied by self-doubt about a single’s ability to deal with it. You will find around one hundred medically recognized anxiety signs or symptoms. Actual signs and symptoms involve trembling, coronary heart palpitations, nausea, chest tightness, sweating, and more.

Not all anxiety is indicative of an anxiety disorder. It could be thought of “usual” to possess some anxiety ahead of using an enormous test or offering a presentation in front of your large viewers.

So when is experiencing anxiety considered a problem? At what stage does it get labeled an anxiety disorder?

Only when anxiety is chronic (6 weeks or more time), acute, exaggerated and also to an objective observer, irrational is it called an anxiety disorder.

The phrase anxiety disorder is really a blanket name that encompasses five forms of anxiety disorders. They’re:

- generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

- obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

- social phobia or societal anxiety disorder (SAD)

- distinct phobias (which include agoraphobia)

- panic disorder

And lastly, what is actually a panic or anxiety attack? A panic attack is defined like a sudden surge of overwhelming fear that comes on all of a sudden without apparent reason. Indicators incorporate racing heartbeat, gasping for breath, shaking, paralyzing terror, as well as feeling like you would possibly die. Sufferers describe it as feeling like you’re possessing a heart attack. They are intense, but fortunately quick in duration, commonly only lasting a few mins.

There is no difference among an anxiety attack or perhaps a panic attack. All those phrases suggest the same thing.

Anyone who suffers from panic attacks is claimed to obtain panic disorder. Recall that panic disorder is one particular of your 5 anxiety disorders.

I hope I’ve helped bring you clarity on definitions of these various phrases. The take on apart here is the fact that there can be a difference amongst health-related phrases and lay terms. And the place alongside the anxiety continuum somebody falls depends around the severity and duration of signs or symptoms.

Modern day medicine generally fails that can help folks solve their most persistent and annoying mental well-being concerns. Medical doctors’ options is often high priced, ineffective, or have damaging part effects. We do the exploration on the top panic and Social Anxiety Disorder Test.

A person suffering from GAD has exaggerated worries in everyday life even though there is little of nothing to get worried about. If the anxiety is severe, sufferers may have difficulty performing even the simplest daily activities. It is important to know how to deal with generalized anxiety disorder to get your life back on track and experience the daily joy of life.

People with GAD has intense and persistent worries about almost everything in everyday life, cannot relax, find it hard to concentrate, has trouble sleeping and their anxiety is unreasonable. Physical manifestation includes irritability, nausea, trembling, lightheadedness, headaches, muscle tension and profuse sweating. These symptoms are really disturbing and can interfere with school, work and everyday life. Here are some tips to help you deal with generalized anxiety disorder.

Seek professional help. If your anxiety is too much for you to handle and making your life miserable, the best thing to do is consult your doctor. Do not hesitate in seeking professional help because mental health professionals are trained to know how to deal with generalized anxiety disorder sufferers and they can give the proper diagnosis and treatments suitable for your condition. Medicines or cognitive-behavioral therapy maybe recommended by your doctor.

Meditation and stress management. Stress is one of the triggers of anxiety attacks. If it is not possible to live a stress-free life, you have to at least know how to manage your stress. Meditation is one healthy way of managing stress and relieving anxiety. Sitting comfortably with quiet mind, thinking nothing and deep breathing is a good way to release your stress. To deal with generalized anxiety disorder, avoid stressful situation as much as possible. For instance, if you have to cook dinner for your in-laws after work and you know it will make you anxious the whole day, try to talk about this to your husband or arrange someone to help you and always be positive that things will happened as planned.

Support group. A self-help or support group will be beneficial for you. It will make you feel better to know that there are other people who share the same problem as yours. Sharing your experiences and fears is another good way to deal with generalized anxiety disorder.
Many people will experience the frightening symptoms of a panic attack during their lives. They will have the racing heart, difficulty breathing, faintness and chest pain that will make them fearful they are having a heart attack. Although terrifying, these symptoms will cause no harm.Having a panic attack or two is not a sign that you have any medical problem. However, when they occur frequently for no apparent reason and you begin worrying about your next attack, or you start to change your behavior, like not going to a certain place because that’s where you once had an attack, then you may have a panic disorder. Most experts agree that there can be multiple panic disorder causes. There is not just one factor but a combination of conditions that contribute to this disorder. These include medical, environmental, biological and genetic influences. When looking for panic disorder causes, you will first want to check out certain medical or physical possibilities. Some medical conditions, such as Hypoglycemia, Mitral Valve Prolapse, Epilepsy and Hyperthyroidism can cause panic attacks. Use of stimulants such cocaine, amphetamines, too much caffeine or withdrawal from certain medications can also cause attacks.Additional panic disorder causes can be due to environmental factors. These include traumas or other stressful conditions you faced at sometime during your life. These may include, but are not limited to, child abuse, parents who were overprotective or always anxious, serious illness, death or rape.Heredity is also suspected of being another of the panic disorder causes. It has been found that you are 8 times more likely to have a panic disorder if your parents or grandparents had it as well. Other studies have shown that in cases of identical twins, if one of the twins has it the other twin has a 40% chance of developing is too.One possibility of a biological cause could be an imbalance of a chemical within your brain, called serotonin, which helps control anxiety. Another possibility is that, at times, there may be an improper mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen within your system. This causes your body to issue a signal that you are suffocating and this creates a panic situation. The bottom line is that these are all theories as no one truly knows what specifically causes panic disorder. The good news is that, regardless of what the panic disorder causes are, it is treatable. With a combination of therapy and medication, it is possible to end all your panic disorder for once and for all.To find out more information about panic disorder causes, you can do so by visiting http://www.anxietycuresite.com/panic-disorder-causes/.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is widely accepted and has become the treatment of choice for anxiety and panic disorders. It is estimated that roughly 80-85% of people lead an attack free life after completing their cognitive behavioral treatment sessions.

CBT focuses on two main aspects with the first being identifying and consequently changing the negative thinking patterns that lead to the anxiety and panic. The second aspect of CBT for panic disorder is to desensitize the experience through effective exposure of what is feared. Cognitive behavioral therapy basically helps to change the way you think, and therefore the way you react to whatever the stimuli is that induces your anxiety. Of course the most valuable benefit to CBT as a natural treatment to panic disorder is the fact that you will be able to live your life attack free. However there are other equally great benefits that will help you lead a more fulfilling life! 1. Learning to calmly address fears: Panic attacks can be described as an irrational reaction to a fear, memory, event, place, etc. It is a bodily reaction to the minds misinterpretation of said events. While the emotion itself may be valid the catastrophic reaction to it typically is not. For example, many people have a fear of drowning, but a person who suffers from panic disorder may experience a severe reaction to this fear while standing in a puddle of water. CBT will teach you how to calmly and safely address these fears. 2. Effective Stress Management: Lets be honest – most adults could learn a thing or two about effectively managing their stress levels, so you aren’t allow in this area! But it can be said that a person who suffers from anxiety disorders have an even lower stress threshold. Where the average person takes a frustrating event with a grain of salt, you may go into full stress out mode. The effects of stress on the body is so damaging, not just mentally – but physically as well. So living a life where you are constantly stressed or on the verge of stress is counterproductive to your health. 3. Increased Self-Esteem: Panic attacks can be very embarrassing for the sufferer. Due to the lack of public knowledge about the disorder, many experience this disorder alone. They believe that something is wrong with them or that people will laugh at them once they know the truth. As result, they may avoid public interaction and socialization. By learning to calmly address your fears, and manage your stress levels – you will regain the confidence you need to be that loving and interactive person you desire! 4. Lower Depression: Panic disorder can be a very isolating condition for someone who feels misunderstood, unloved and different than the rest. These feelings can cause deep bouts of depression. So decreasing that depression is a natural side effect when you overcome your fears, increase self esteem and learn effective stress management. 5. Reverse negative thinking and habits: It is often said that we are our own worst enemy. Our negative thinking and bad habits cause unnecessary pain and anguish in our lives. This is even doubly so for a person suffering from anxiety disorders. In fact, this is usually the root cause of the disorders. Ridding yourself of the negative thinking is paramount to your success in overcoming your attacks! 6. Full participation in YOUR life!: Imagine what it will feel like once you begin to live your life free of fear and panic attacks! You will gain peace of mind, the ability to go where you want – when you want, you’ll release that social butterfly deep inside of you that’s just begging to get out! You will finally be able to live your life, not merely exist in it! Cognitive behavioral therapy is considered to be the most effective cure to anxiety and panic disorder – and there’s a good reason for this which is simply put: It works! Is is common in people with panic disorder?

Best answer:

Answer by Robin
Many people suffering from anxiety (panic disorder) also suffer from depression. One symptom of depression is being quick to become irritable about little things. It is not uncommon. Your friend is likely aware that he’s being snippy – cut him a little slack and let the little things just go.

Article by James Rodigan

Child anxiety disorder is the most common psychiatric disorder in children. These disorders cause a great deal of disruption in the lives of all members of a family. If they are untreated in children, they most often contribute to serious psychiatric illnesses as the children become adolescences and adults.

The U.S. Surgeon General estimates that as many as one in eight children between the ages of nine and seventeen will suffer from an anxiety problem each year. The types of disorders begin at different ages, and studies indicate these disorders follow “developmental progression” from one anxiety to another, and then on to an affective disorder.

Children, much like adults, tend to have more than one kind of disorder at a time. About three-quarters of children with an anxiety disorder have other disorders including depression. Anxiety disorders may also occur along with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Tourette’s syndrome.

Tourette’s syndrome is an inherited neuropsychiatric disorder that manifests itself with tics of speech and movement. Common physical outcroppings of the disorder include eye blinking, coughing, sniffing, throat clearing, and facial movements. This particular disorder usually decreases through adolescence and is seldom severe in adults.

Anxiety becomes a disorder in a child when a mismatch occurs between a threat and the child’s emotional and physical response. This overreaction can be influenced by brain chemistry, gender, family history, and age. Girls have higher rates of anxiety disorders than boys do, and this carries over into adulthood.

The most common anxiety disorder among small children is separation anxiety. Social anxiety follows this in adolescence and then reverts to panic disorders as they reach adulthood. This is the usual progression of disorders when not treated at the earliest possible age.

The child who has a parent with an anxiety disorder has a much greater chance of developing similar disorders than other children. The odds are stacked against the child before birth, because indicators point to a probability of three-and-a-half times greater chance than with children whose parents have no such disorder.

Heredity is a strong influence on anxiety disorders. For instance, one child in four who has obsessive-compulsive disorder has a family member with the same misfortune. Of the remaining three-quarters of test groups, almost all have a relative with some kind of anxiety disorder.

A child’s temperament and personality may affect the way he or she accepts new situations or stimuli. The same may be true of how he or she interprets sensations associated with anxiety and fear. These factors play an important role in the severity of disorders when they occur.

Not every child with fears develops a child anxiety disorder, but fear is a contributing reason. The biggest contributor, however, seems to be the inherited traits of family and environment. At any rate, treatment at an early age is important to fashion an adult who can function normally in society.

Article by Steve Hill

Social phobia or social anxiety disorder is the constant fear of being criticized or evaluated by other people. People who suffer from social phobia are excessively self-conscious to the point where they feel that everyone around them is looking at them and judging them harshly. They become nervous, anxious and afraid of the world around them. For those with social phobia, everyday social situations like parties can become highly intimidating ordeals.

The key to the problem is that people with social anxiety want to be liked. They want very much to be seen as witty, dynamic and sociable. They want to fit in. However their anxiety about not performing well in public is so strong that it tends to cripple their best efforts. They freeze when they meet new people, particularly if they want these people to like them, for instance because they feel attracted to them or because they look up to them. They are afraid that their anxiety will be noticeable and this fear causes the anxiety to grow and turn into a vicious cycle.

Social anxiety usually develops early and without adequate treatment can be a chronic, unrelenting torturous condition. However, with suitable care, it is possible to overcome social phobia altogether.

Social anxiety disorder is an illness that customarily runs a chronic course and is often associated with other psychiatric disorders. The duration of social anxiety disorder is frequently lifelong. Yet in these times, there is no need for it to be. Significant improvements in the quality of life are within the reach of nearly all sufferers.

From a neurobiological point of view, low levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotomin are commonly associated with social anxiety. Research shows that people with social phobia are five times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease in later life – Parkinson’s is caused by abnormally low levels of dopamine. From a pharmaceutical standpoint, drugs which boost levels of these neurotransmitters can provide very efficient treatment for social phobia.

As for psychological treatment, among the most effective are CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and CGBT (Cognitive Group Behavioural Therapy). In supportive environments, social phobics can learn to address their fears and can steadily overcome them. With the help of a therapist, they can develop strategies for coping and find a more constructive way of viewing their fears. The advantage of group therapy is that they can meet and interact with fellow sufferers, which will help them to realise that they are not facing their problems alone.

Article by Richard J. Kennedy

Panic and anxiety disorder affects close to 40 million people in the United States, and those totals reflect only the adult population. It is also estimated that 1 in every 10 children and adolescents will also struggle with some form of anxiety. So, where exactly can you turn for information and support if you suspect that you or a loved one may be affected?

Anxiety is a perfectly normal human emotion, but when anxiety becomes severe, persistent and gets in the way of normal functioning it could be an indication of an anxiety disorder. While there are many different types of anxiety disorders, including Generalized Snxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and Agoraphobia, the one characteristic that unifies all of them is a pervasive sense of fear and unwanted, uncomfortable thoughts. These thoughts and fears, when left untreated can cause serious problems – both personally and professionally – for the anxiety or panic sufferer.

Anxiety disorders have no known cause, and depending on who you talk to you about the origin of your particular disorder you may get several different responses. Severe stress, family history and major life changes, such as the loss of a loved one, are all thought to be contributing factors in anxiety disorders, and many doctors believe the condition may be caused by a chemical imbalance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.

Where to Turn for Help

If you suspect that you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder, the first thing you should do is consult your family physician for a complete examination. Explain your symptoms in detail, including how these symptoms affect your daily functioning. If your doctor confirms the presence of an anxiety disorder, he or she may then refer you to a mental health professional for treatment. Usually this treatment will consist of a combination of prescription medication, to help ease the symptoms of your anxiety, and psychotherapy designed to help you deal with the underlying cause of those symptoms.

Despite how an anxiety disorder can sometimes make you feel, you are not alone. Depending on where you live and the type of anxiety disorder you are coping with, you may be able to find a support group of people experiencing the same type of challenges that you are facing.
Abnormal and pathological fear and anxiety is just some of the different forms that covers anxiety disorder. As of this time, the psychiatric diagnostic criteria has recognized a wide range of variety of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders can be present from an early age or begin suddenly after a triggering event. This would affect everyone regardless of their age and gender. Anxiety disorders are prone to flare up at times of high stress and are frequently accompanied by physiological symptoms such as headache, sweating, muscle spasms, palpitations, dizziness, fear, nervousness, worry, dread and hypertension, which in some cases lead to fatigue or even exhaustion. This type of anxiety that happens constantly or too intense it may very well cause the person to feel distracted, tense, always on the alert, and preoccupied.

In terms of discourse, anxiety and fear are often used interchangeably. However, in clinical usage, they have distinct meanings. Anxiety is defined as an unpleasant emotional state for which the cause is either not readily identified or perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable, whereas fear is an emotional and physiological response to a recognized external threat. In lighter terms, anxiety is unidentifiable and is usually perceived and fear is otherwise.

Researches have also indicated that anxiety disorders are often tracked with those who has a family history of anxiety disorders, specifically certain types of disorders.

However, anxiety is a natural human reaction. Oftentimes, this serves as the important basic survival function of a person, which it can benefit a person when he feels or perceive danger.

In case the mind of a person react to threat or danger, he will automatically trembling hands or legs, a queasy stomach, sweaty palms, tense muscles, and a faster heartbeat and breathing. These sensations are the body’s normal response to threat. These responses are caused by the adrenaline rush as well as other chemical reactions in our body that will allow us to make a quicker reaction against danger.

According to research, anxiety disorders are the most common of emotional disorders. It fills people’s lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear and can grow progressively worse if not treated. The good news however is that treatments for anxiety disorders are available, and research is yielding new, improved therapies that can help most people with anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives.

The anxiety disorder symptoms often happen abruptly and gradually. But it is common for those with anxiety disorder to not know what’s causing the anxiety they have. Sometimes the feeling of doom and apprehension just come out of nowhere.

The different signs of anxiety disorders would include:

*Uncontrollable obsessive thoughts *Having feelings of overwhelming fear and panic *Intrusive memories that are painful recurring nightmares *Nausea, sweating, muscle tension, and other uncomfortable physical reactions *Feelings of apprehension or dread *Trouble in concentrating *Having a jumpy and tense feeling *Pounding heart *Sweating *stomach upset or dizziness, frequent urination or diarrhea *A feeling that you are losing your breath *Insomnia, fatigue, headaches, muscle tensions, and tremors and twitches *Anticipation of the worst and watching for signs of danger *A feeling that your mind has gone blank, irritability and restlessness

Fortunately, much progress has been made in the last two decades in the treatment of people with anxiety disorders. Although the exact treatment approach depends on the type of disorder, a combination of medication and psychotherapy may be used to treat anxiety disorders.

General anxiety disorder is a common problem, but doesn’t get talked about so much. In fact, millions of us are affected by some form of anxiety disorders. In this article I’ll talk about what this elusive disorder is, and what you can do about it.

What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD?

Virtually everyone has occasional bouts of anxiety, or anxious thought patterns. In contrast, GAD is a state of periodic and elevated anxiety, often characterized by excessive thinking and dwelling on the “what ifs”. As a result, you may feel that there’s no way out of the vicious cycle of worry. You probably have this disorder if you have recurring anxiety, as opposed to occasional worry.

What happens when you have GAD?

To illustrate how it works, we’ll use the analogy of a water faucet. If a faucet is working properly when turned off, we experience a relaxed home environment – which equates to a relatively anxiety-free existence. However, if the faucet has a leak and is dripping periodically, you could equate this disruptive dripping noise to that of someone with general anxiety.

Over time the pipe remains intact, however the leak gets worse. What was a minor disturbance can escalate into a loud, steady stream, which can no longer be ignored. This situation is how general anxiety disorder feels – it demands your attention.

Worse yet, this unstable situation is a breeding ground for the pipe to burst. In our analogy, this is when the disorder can turn into a panic attack.

What causes GAD?

General anxiety disorder is caused by recurring anxiety:

Repressed emotions A chemical imbalance Nutritional imbalance Physical, mental or emotional exhaustion caused by stress

What’s are your best treatment options? Once you know the causes of anxiety, you can work to reduce or eliminate anxiety entirely.

Here are four steps that you can take to help eliminate GAD:

Educate yourself. There are many excellent holistic books and classes that help reduce or eliminate anxiety by teaching the principles of the mind-body-emotion connection, as well as anti-stress techniques.

See a qualified medical professional to get a diagnosis in the event that you have a nutritional or chemical imbalance. You may want to do one or all of the following: a.) a blood screening, b.) a checkup with your physician, and c.) discuss your situation with a psychiatrist (Ph.D.) who understands medications. Your doctor can help you select the appropriate course of action if required.

Meet with a therapist or support group, which can assist you by teaching healthy ways to deal with conflict, rather than repressing emotions.

Use exercise as a Stress Reducer: Exercise produces the good hormones, such as endorphins, that keeping your mind and body balanced. Some people benefit from Yoga, a practice that incorporates relaxation techniques into exercise and movement.

While it takes commitment to identify and consider the best general anxiety disorder treatment that suits your lifestyle and your needs, it’s well worth it! Many people who treat their disorder proactively report full recovery. For you, this means you’ll be rewarded with a better quality of life, and a greater sense of peace.

When Panic Disorder Symptoms Goes Untreated – A Positive Look At Your Options

When you possess an illness, you look to a medical professional to fix it. Nevertheless, when you are living in denial or trepidation, sometimes disregarding your panic disorder symptoms, can regularly lead to avoiding of treatment. This can cause crucial consequences for you and your way of life.

No one who has ever had a panic attacks would ever plan to have another. Yet, thousands of people who have experienced panic attacks go without therapy.

No matter what the foundation cause of the attack, some people simply are in denial or decline treatment. They don’t wish for inquiries asked or others to think they have some type of mental instability. Experiencing an anxiety attack doesn’t necessarily mean you are going crazy, but can be a mark of another dilemma that should be dealt with. Let’s observe what happens when panic attacks and panic disorders symptoms, are left untreated.

Self-fulfilling ProphecyAnxiety attacks that arise repeatedly often leads to panic disorder. While numerous panic attacks take place as a result of some form of triggering circumstances, the trigger with panic disorder may be you. Just the thought of having another panic attack can actually bring one about. It’s called “anticipatory anxiety.” What you fear is an irrational apprehension that something unlikely may come about. You fear an irrational fear which brings on the panic attack. Prophecy is fulfilled.

Panic Disorder Symptoms Lacking Treatment Can Cause Withdrawals From SocietyWhat happens when you burn your arm on the stove? In the future you shun placing your hand in the identical spot and experiencing a similar thing. The same sort of thing happens with individuals who have experienced panic attacks.

No one wants to be caught in a public place when something like an anxiety attack occurs again. There is no guarantee that you will have another one however your mind convinces you otherwise. As a result, to reduce the chances of others seeing and asking questions, you start to avoid social places. That includes parties, family functions, stores, restaurants, movies, recitals, and the like. You get the picture.

At the extreme, you acquire phobias like agoraphobia. Once regarded as a phobia that develops on its own, it is now believed that it is a result of untreated anxiety disorders. To guard yourself, you avoid other people and places where crowds will come together. You strip off yourself from humanity to protect yourself from the embarrassment.Disregarding Panic Disorder Symptoms Can Lead To Physical IllnessStress can kill; plain and straightforward.

Living a life where your body is always on high alert can take its toll on your immune system. Withdrawing from associates can lead to depression and, in serious cases, thoughts of suicide. Your coping methods are going to be skewed also. Several turn to drugs, alcohol, or food, all of which bring along even more problems for an already complex set of state of affairs.

Reduce your alcohol consumption. Alcohol can be described as depressant. For people who are trying to condense their panic, this will only boomerang. As a depressant, alcohol can lead toward irrational behaviors which may trigger a panic attackWithout some form of treatment, panic attack and panic disorder is sure to persist and grow worse.

Consult a health care professional trained to accommodate anxiety disorders about what you can do. Get back to the business of living your life rather than running from your panic attacks.
