Child anxiety disorder is the most common psychiatric disorder in children. These disorders cause a great deal of disruption in the lives of all members of a family. If they are untreated in children, they most often contribute to serious psychiatric illnesses as the children become adolescences and adults.

The U.S. Surgeon General estimates that as many as one in eight children between the ages of nine and seventeen will suffer from an anxiety problem each year. The types of disorders begin at different ages, and studies indicate these disorders follow “developmental progression” from one anxiety to another, and then on to an affective disorder.

Children, much like adults, tend to have more than one kind of disorder at a time. About three-quarters of children with an anxiety disorder have other disorders including depression. Anxiety disorders may also occur along with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Tourette’s syndrome.

Tourette’s syndrome is an inherited neuropsychiatric disorder that manifests itself with tics of speech and movement. Common physical outcroppings of the disorder include eye blinking, coughing, sniffing, throat clearing, and facial movements. This particular disorder usually decreases through adolescence and is seldom severe in adults.

Anxiety becomes a disorder in a child when a mismatch occurs between a threat and the child’s emotional and physical response. This overreaction can be influenced by brain chemistry, gender, family history, and age. Girls have higher rates of anxiety disorders than boys do, and this carries over into adulthood.

The most common anxiety disorder among small children is separation anxiety. Social anxiety follows this in adolescence and then reverts to panic disorders as they reach adulthood. This is the usual progression of disorders when not treated at the earliest possible age.

The child who has a parent with an anxiety disorder has a much greater chance of developing similar disorders than other children. The odds are stacked against the child before birth, because indicators point to a probability of three-and-a-half times greater chance than with children whose parents have no such disorder.

Heredity is a strong influence on anxiety disorders. For instance, one child in four who has obsessive-compulsive disorder has a family member with the same misfortune. Of the remaining three-quarters of test groups, almost all have a relative with some kind of anxiety disorder.

A child’s temperament and personality may affect the way he or she accepts new situations or stimuli. The same may be true of how he or she interprets sensations associated with anxiety and fear. These factors play an important role in the severity of disorders when they occur.

Not every child with fears develops a child anxiety disorder, but fear is a contributing reason. The biggest contributor, however, seems to be the inherited traits of family and environment. At any rate, treatment at an early age is important to fashion an adult who can function normally in society.

Social phobia or social anxiety disorder is the constant fear of being criticized or evaluated by other people. People who suffer from social phobia are excessively self-conscious to the point where they feel that everyone around them is looking at them and judging them harshly. They become nervous, anxious and afraid of the world around them. For those with social phobia, everyday social situations like parties can become highly intimidating ordeals.

The key to the problem is that people with social anxiety want to be liked. They want very much to be seen as witty, dynamic and sociable. They want to fit in. However their anxiety about not performing well in public is so strong that it tends to cripple their best efforts. They freeze when they meet new people, particularly if they want these people to like them, for instance because they feel attracted to them or because they look up to them. They are afraid that their anxiety will be noticeable and this fear causes the anxiety to grow and turn into a vicious cycle.

Social anxiety usually develops early and without adequate treatment can be a chronic, unrelenting torturous condition. However, with suitable care, it is possible to overcome social phobia altogether.

Social anxiety disorder is an illness that customarily runs a chronic course and is often associated with other psychiatric disorders. The duration of social anxiety disorder is frequently lifelong. Yet in these times, there is no need for it to be. Significant improvements in the quality of life are within the reach of nearly all sufferers.

From a neurobiological point of view, low levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotomin are commonly associated with social anxiety. Research shows that people with social phobia are five times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease in later life – Parkinson’s is caused by abnormally low levels of dopamine. From a pharmaceutical standpoint, drugs which boost levels of these neurotransmitters can provide very efficient treatment for social phobia.

As for psychological treatment, among the most effective are CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and CGBT (Cognitive Group Behavioural Therapy). In supportive environments, social phobics can learn to address their fears and can steadily overcome them. With the help of a therapist, they can develop strategies for coping and find a more constructive way of viewing their fears. The advantage of group therapy is that they can meet and interact with fellow sufferers, which will help them to realise that they are not facing their problems alone.

Article by Richard J. Kennedy

Panic and anxiety disorder affects close to 40 million people in the United States, and those totals reflect only the adult population. It is also estimated that 1 in every 10 children and adolescents will also struggle with some form of anxiety. So, where exactly can you turn for information and support if you suspect that you or a loved one may be affected?

Anxiety is a perfectly normal human emotion, but when anxiety becomes severe, persistent and gets in the way of normal functioning it could be an indication of an anxiety disorder. While there are many different types of anxiety disorders, including Generalized Snxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and Agoraphobia, the one characteristic that unifies all of them is a pervasive sense of fear and unwanted, uncomfortable thoughts. These thoughts and fears, when left untreated can cause serious problems – both personally and professionally – for the anxiety or panic sufferer.

Anxiety disorders have no known cause, and depending on who you talk to you about the origin of your particular disorder you may get several different responses. Severe stress, family history and major life changes, such as the loss of a loved one, are all thought to be contributing factors in anxiety disorders, and many doctors believe the condition may be caused by a chemical imbalance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.

Where to Turn for Help

If you suspect that you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder, the first thing you should do is consult your family physician for a complete examination. Explain your symptoms in detail, including how these symptoms affect your daily functioning. If your doctor confirms the presence of an anxiety disorder, he or she may then refer you to a mental health professional for treatment. Usually this treatment will consist of a combination of prescription medication, to help ease the symptoms of your anxiety, and psychotherapy designed to help you deal with the underlying cause of those symptoms.

Despite how an anxiety disorder can sometimes make you feel, you are not alone. Depending on where you live and the type of anxiety disorder you are coping with, you may be able to find a support group of people experiencing the same type of challenges that you are facing. If there isn’t a support group in your area, there are many online support groups that may be able to help.

How to Find Out More about Panic and Anxiety Disorders

In the past, information about anxiety disorders was hard to come by, but with the popularity of the internet all of that has changed. There are literally thousands of online sites, including the one operated by the National Institute for Mental Health, or NIMH.com, dedicated to providing current and useful information to those suffering from all types of anxiety disorders and phobias.

Living with an anxiety disorder can be a frightening and frustrating experience, but it doesn’t have to be a lonely one. If anxiety is beginning to cause problems in your life, seek out medical attention and support immediately, and take the first step towards reclaiming your life.

Abnormal and pathological fear and anxiety is just some of the different forms that covers anxiety disorder. As of this time, the psychiatric diagnostic criteria has recognized a wide range of variety of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders can be present from an early age or begin suddenly after a triggering event. This would affect everyone regardless of their age and gender. Anxiety disorders are prone to flare up at times of high stress and are frequently accompanied by physiological symptoms such as headache, sweating, muscle spasms, palpitations, dizziness, fear, nervousness, worry, dread and hypertension, which in some cases lead to fatigue or even exhaustion. This type of anxiety that happens constantly or too intense it may very well cause the person to feel distracted, tense, always on the alert, and preoccupied.

In terms of discourse, anxiety and fear are often used interchangeably. However, in clinical usage, they have distinct meanings. Anxiety is defined as an unpleasant emotional state for which the cause is either not readily identified or perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable, whereas fear is an emotional and physiological response to a recognized external threat. In lighter terms, anxiety is unidentifiable and is usually perceived and fear is otherwise.

Researches have also indicated that anxiety disorders are often tracked with those who has a family history of anxiety disorders, specifically certain types of disorders.

However, anxiety is a natural human reaction. Oftentimes, this serves as the important basic survival function of a person, which it can benefit a person when he feels or perceive danger.

In case the mind of a person react to threat or danger, he will automatically trembling hands or legs, a queasy stomach, sweaty palms, tense muscles, and a faster heartbeat and breathing. These sensations are the body’s normal response to threat. These responses are caused by the adrenaline rush as well as other chemical reactions in our body that will allow us to make a quicker reaction against danger.

According to research, anxiety disorders are the most common of emotional disorders. It fills people’s lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear and can grow progressively worse if not treated. The good news however is that treatments for anxiety disorders are available, and research is yielding new, improved therapies that can help most people with anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives.

The anxiety disorder symptoms often happen abruptly and gradually. But it is common for those with anxiety disorder to not know what’s causing the anxiety they have. Sometimes the feeling of doom and apprehension just come out of nowhere.

The different signs of anxiety disorders would include:

*Uncontrollable obsessive thoughts *Having feelings of overwhelming fear and panic *Intrusive memories that are painful recurring nightmares *Nausea, sweating, muscle tension, and other uncomfortable physical reactions *Feelings of apprehension or dread *Trouble in concentrating *Having a jumpy and tense feeling *Pounding heart *Sweating *stomach upset or dizziness, frequent urination or diarrhea *A feeling that you are losing your breath *Insomnia, fatigue, headaches, muscle tensions, and tremors and twitches *Anticipation of the worst and watching for signs of danger *A feeling that your mind has gone blank, irritability and restlessness

Fortunately, much progress has been made in the last two decades in the treatment of people with anxiety disorders. Although the exact treatment approach depends on the type of disorder, a combination of medication and psychotherapy may be used to treat anxiety disorders.

Article by Kathy

General anxiety disorder is a common problem, but doesn’t get talked about so much. In fact, millions of us are affected by some form of anxiety disorders. In this article I’ll talk about what this elusive disorder is, and what you can do about it.

What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD?

Virtually everyone has occasional bouts of anxiety, or anxious thought patterns. In contrast, GAD is a state of periodic and elevated anxiety, often characterized by excessive thinking and dwelling on the “what ifs”. As a result, you may feel that there’s no way out of the vicious cycle of worry. You probably have this disorder if you have recurring anxiety, as opposed to occasional worry.

What happens when you have GAD?

To illustrate how it works, we’ll use the analogy of a water faucet. If a faucet is working properly when turned off, we experience a relaxed home environment – which equates to a relatively anxiety-free existence. However, if the faucet has a leak and is dripping periodically, you could equate this disruptive dripping noise to that of someone with general anxiety.

Over time the pipe remains intact, however the leak gets worse. What was a minor disturbance can escalate into a loud, steady stream, which can no longer be ignored. This situation is how general anxiety disorder feels – it demands your attention.

Worse yet, this unstable situation is a breeding ground for the pipe to burst. In our analogy, this is when the disorder can turn into a panic attack.

What causes GAD?

General anxiety disorder is caused by recurring anxiety:

Repressed emotions A chemical imbalance Nutritional imbalance Physical, mental or emotional exhaustion caused by stress

What’s are your best treatment options? Once you know the causes of anxiety, you can work to reduce or eliminate anxiety entirely.

Here are four steps that you can take to help eliminate GAD:

Educate yourself. There are many excellent holistic books and classes that help reduce or eliminate anxiety by teaching the principles of the mind-body-emotion connection, as well as anti-stress techniques.

See a qualified medical professional to get a diagnosis in the event that you have a nutritional or chemical imbalance. You may want to do one or all of the following: a.) a blood screening, b.) a checkup with your physician, and c.) discuss your situation with a psychiatrist (Ph.D.) who understands medications. Your doctor can help you select the appropriate course of action if required.

Meet with a therapist or support group, which can assist you by teaching healthy ways to deal with conflict, rather than repressing emotions.

Use exercise as a Stress Reducer: Exercise produces the good hormones, such as endorphins, that keeping your mind and body balanced. Some people benefit from Yoga, a practice that incorporates relaxation techniques into exercise and movement.

While it takes commitment to identify and consider the best general anxiety disorder treatment that suits your lifestyle and your needs, it’s well worth it! Many people who treat their disorder proactively report full recovery. For you, this means you’ll be rewarded with a better quality of life, and a greater sense of peace.

When Panic Disorder Symptoms Goes Untreated – A Positive Look At Your Options

When you possess an illness, you look to a medical professional to fix it. Nevertheless, when you are living in denial or trepidation, sometimes disregarding your panic disorder symptoms, can regularly lead to avoiding of treatment. This can cause crucial consequences for you and your way of life.

No one who has ever had a panic attacks would ever plan to have another. Yet, thousands of people who have experienced panic attacks go without therapy.

No matter what the foundation cause of the attack, some people simply are in denial or decline treatment. They don’t wish for inquiries asked or others to think they have some type of mental instability. Experiencing an anxiety attack doesn’t necessarily mean you are going crazy, but can be a mark of another dilemma that should be dealt with. Let’s observe what happens when panic attacks and panic disorders symptoms, are left untreated.

Self-fulfilling ProphecyAnxiety attacks that arise repeatedly often leads to panic disorder. While numerous panic attacks take place as a result of some form of triggering circumstances, the trigger with panic disorder may be you. Just the thought of having another panic attack can actually bring one about. It’s called “anticipatory anxiety.” What you fear is an irrational apprehension that something unlikely may come about. You fear an irrational fear which brings on the panic attack. Prophecy is fulfilled.

Panic Disorder Symptoms Lacking Treatment Can Cause Withdrawals From SocietyWhat happens when you burn your arm on the stove? In the future you shun placing your hand in the identical spot and experiencing a similar thing. The same sort of thing happens with individuals who have experienced panic attacks.

No one wants to be caught in a public place when something like an anxiety attack occurs again. There is no guarantee that you will have another one however your mind convinces you otherwise. As a result, to reduce the chances of others seeing and asking questions, you start to avoid social places. That includes parties, family functions, stores, restaurants, movies, recitals, and the like. You get the picture.

At the extreme, you acquire phobias like agoraphobia. Once regarded as a phobia that develops on its own, it is now believed that it is a result of untreated anxiety disorders. To guard yourself, you avoid other people and places where crowds will come together. You strip off yourself from humanity to protect yourself from the embarrassment.Disregarding Panic Disorder Symptoms Can Lead To Physical IllnessStress can kill; plain and straightforward.

Living a life where your body is always on high alert can take its toll on your immune system. Withdrawing from associates can lead to depression and, in serious cases, thoughts of suicide. Your coping methods are going to be skewed also. Several turn to drugs, alcohol, or food, all of which bring along even more problems for an already complex set of state of affairs.

Reduce your alcohol consumption. Alcohol can be described as depressant. For people who are trying to condense their panic, this will only boomerang. As a depressant, alcohol can lead toward irrational behaviors which may trigger a panic attackWithout some form of treatment, panic attack and panic disorder is sure to persist and grow worse.

Consult a health care professional trained to accommodate anxiety disorders about what you can do. Get back to the business of living your life rather than running from your panic attacks.

If you suffer from an anxiety disorder you’re all too familiar with its effects. Anxiety disorders can appear at all phases of life and children can also experience them. There are different kinds of anxiety: panic, obsessive compulsiveness and generalized anxiety. This article covers the basic facts regarding generalized anxiety disorder, including symptoms and treatment choices.

Being continually afraid or concerned over everyday affairs is a typical symptom of generalized anxiety disorder. If you suffer from this it’s quite common to experience unrelenting feelings of tenseness, which can cause you to feel tired if it gets in the way of your sleep. Nausea and diarrhea, among other stomach health conditions, can result from constant worrying. People suffering from generalized anxiety disorder also have to deal with recurring back pain, neck pain, muscle tension, and headaches.

The exact reason for generalized anxiety disorder is still debated by doctors. Since many people with generalized anxiety disorder respond well to medication, it’s thought that the disorder has an effect on brain chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin. Since this disorder is typically inherited in families, experts believe that genes and several environmental concerns contribute to basic anxiety disorder. Specialists believe that those suffering with this disorder have experienced a very stressful event prior to the onset.

Although no one knows for sure what causes it, physicians at least have the ability nowadays to treat the distressing symptoms and improve patients’ daily lives. Medicines used to treat various psychological symptoms, such as depression, are often the first step in treatment. Prozac and Paxil are just a couple of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (also referred to as SSRIs) physicians might utilize to minimize or inhibit anxiety related symptoms and conditions. But when these medications do not work, health care providers have an option to write a prescription for something different that may work instead.

Combining drugs with therapy can be an extremely effective technique that will lead to excellent treatment results. Patients learn to control their adverse thoughts when they engage in psychotherapy. Commonly, psychotherapy sessions are led by a psychologist or psychiatrist who has experience in treating anxiety disorders. Exercises that focus on relaxation such as yoga or meditation can also be very effective and noninvasive ways to treat anxiety naturally. The combination commonly brings less serious symptoms and a better life for you.

Post traumatic pressure condition is really a reaction to staying exposed to an occasion outside the selection of typical human practical experience. It is a term made use of to describe a collection of psychological symptoms adhering to an occasion that may be classed as traumatic.

Article by Richard Keir

Admittedly it’s a lot easier to write and read about anxiety panic attacks than it is to actually have them. Panic disorder is usually diagnosed if you experience recurring severe anxiety panic attacks. One, or even a few, panic attacks can happen to nearly anyone under the right – or perhaps the wrong, conditions, but a full-blown panic disorder is a cyclical attack on your life, not a single event.

Panic attacks consist of overwhelming feelings of terror seemingly arising from nowhere. They come with no warning, no obvious threat and no clear reason. Essentially, a huge overdose of the fight or flight response, a panic attack can feel if you’re having a heart attack or about to die. You could have several of these kinds of symptoms:=> Feeling dizzy or as if you’re going to pass out=> Tachycardia or accelerated heart beat=> Peripheral alterations in sensation such as numbness in your fingers=> Chest pains=> A sense of loss of control of yourself=> Difficulty with breathing=> Sudden sweating or feeling cold=> And of course, that feeling of extreme fear

First off, it’s critically important to understand that panic disorder is not some kind of character flaw or weakness. The “just get over it” crew is way out of step with reality. In fact, there is new evidence that panic disorders may be genetically based. Many researchers have suspected this but it is difficult to determine. Dr. Philibert, a professor at the College of medicine at the University of Iowa, has been developing a blood test measuring gene expression in lymphocytes which appears to allow a predictive differential diagnosis. Unfortunately, it is a fairly costly procedure but for those patients where it isn’t clear that the proper diagnosis is panic disorder it could be a life saver.

What his research strongly indicates is that a significant underlying cause of panic disorder may be genetically based. At the very least, his work may help to reshape opinion in the medical community. Doctors who believe that panic disorder is some kind of character disorder – a weakness that can be overcome by just bucking up and coping – have done very little to help anyone with a panic disorder. Hopefully, some solid evidence that there are definite biological underpinnings, may wake a few of the fossils up.

Panic disorder often can lead people into becoming agoraphobic and hiding out in their home – or even in a single room. The inability to pin down any specific cause can lead to everything becoming frightening. Others may develop alcoholism through using alcohol excessively to blunt their responses.

The use of prescription medications often becomes a trap too. While anti-anxiety medications can reduce the incidence and severity of anxiety panic attacks, they come with their own risks which can include serious side effects and addiction.

Traditional psychotherapy has very little to offer anyone suffering from panic disorder since, for most, there is no real psychologically based link to the trigger events. Understanding your psyche may be rewarding for other reasons, but it’s unlikely to be helpful with a true panic disorder.

Thousands of people have found that training systems which work on a behavioral basis to teach means of breaking and side-stepping anxiety panic attack responses are extremely helpful. Genetically based or not, as humans we have the capacity to overcome many of our inherited reactions through learning and practice and are capable of developing an immense degree of control through the use of behavioral techniques.

Anxiety disorder may range from generalized anxiety disorder and phobias to harmful panic disorders. The relative ranges of treatment include psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, medication and self-help. But before the application of these techniques, diagnosis of the disorder is most crucial.

Identifying Panic DisorderNot only for anxiety disorders but diseases of any sort could be effectively cured when and only when it is diagnosed correctly and at the right time. Cognitive therapy helps the affected in modifying such thoughts while behavioral therapy helps in modifying as well as gaining control over the responsive behavior produced by the thoughts.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy, medically termed as CBT, comprises cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy. The various senses of control are taught to the patients as a part of the therapy. Also, every individual is given utmost attention in order to recognize, understand and alter the thinking and behavioral patterns. In short, CBT hones the talent of mastering anxiety throughout life.

MedicationIt is not wise to completely depend upon therapies for treatment because most severe cases of anxiety disorders necessitate medication. Doctors prescribe various anti-anxiety drugs which may be short or long-term with respect to the severity of the disorder. for ages, it is seen that medication in union with other anxiety disorder treatment techniques has given best results.

Self-Help The implementation of all the anxiety disorder treatment techniques would be worthless lest a patient is not self-motivated.

Article by Donald Grossy

People worry about so many problems that it would be difficult to think about them all and qualify them as causes of anxiety. The distinction between the normal stress we call anxiety and general anxiety disorder symptoms comes from the intensity, the frequency and the disruptive nature of the worries. When affected by a general anxiety disorder, worries tend to be a lot higher keeping the mind busy and exhausting the body by a superior consume of energy. Then, the generalized anxiety disorder symptoms fall into two distinct categories. They can cover psychological and physiological manifestations of a varying intensity.

From the physiological category general anxiety disorder symptoms include insomnia, digestive upset, frequent bowel movement, fatigue, muscular sores and tension and jumpiness. People who suffer from an anxiety disorder will have difficulties to rest and they will experience intense fatigue. In fact, besides the lack of sleep, the physical exhaustion is triggered by the brain chemical imbalance as well. The psychological general anxiety disorder symptoms include all sorts of fears, memory and concentration difficulties, permanent tension and irritability, and the impossibility to stop worrying.

In the case of teenagers and children, general anxiety disorder symptoms require a close monitoring because the young anxiety sufferers cannot know whether their worries are disproportionate or normal. There are some common symptoms with all the other patients and some more peculiar ones that characterize this group age. The ‘what if’ worry seems to be recurrent with most teenagers and children as a form of worrying about some future event. Then, younger anxiety victims will express intense self-criticism, a great fear of mistakes and the permanent need for reassurance and approval. Even if you can identify some such signs in the child’s or adolescent’s behavior, only a professional can pass a viable diagnosis.

When the general anxiety disorder symptoms pass the diagnosis of an expert opinion, starting a treatment and a form of therapy is the next required step. Only patients who have more intense symptoms will be prescribed medication, but such a solution only works temporarily. The patient will also have to learn how to self-soothe in addition to learning relaxation techniques and going for psychotherapy sessions. Any person who suffers from general anxiety disorder symptoms can reduce the intensity or prevent a panic attack by learning how to deal with the condition.

Article by Erin Harrington

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is disorder in which the person has suffered an event or events that literally flipped their script for lack of a better term. Any event that is out of your control that makes you feel terrified, powerless, and helpless can lead to PTSD. The defining factor in PTSD is that you have gone through an event in which you believed that you would not survive. Certainly everyone who goes through a terrifying event will experience some symptoms that can be attributed to post traumatic stress. Some experience depression and anxiety or memory and cognitive problems. Some people have nightmares and relive the experience. Some do everything that they can to avoid the circumstances that led to the event. For example, it is common for someone who has been in an automobile accident that was terrifying or in which people died to avoid getting back behind the wheel or to avoid traveling down the same road where the accident occurred. It is also common to relive the moment many times. This is the brain’s attempt to process trauma and to ultimately heal from it. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder occurs when the person has been through an experience that the brain can not process and can not heal or move on from. For example, a small child who has been sexually abused by a parent or by someone that they trust has no point of reference or previous experience to draw upon. Obviously the event makes the child feel helpless, powerless, and hopeless. Obviously the child may feel as though he or she will not survive, especially if the abuser threatens to kill them. How does the brain process this kind of trauma where there no experience to tie the event to? It can’t properly categorize it because it has no point of reference. So, the memory of the event is stored in short term memory and often suppressed until the brain can figure out what to do with it. This is why people who have PTSD have memory problems as well as intrusive thoughts. This is why PTSD sufferers experience triggers based upon sights, smell, sounds, and thoughts. It is an attempt to categorize something that can not be categorized at the time which is an abnormal function within the brain. This greatly affects the emotional system as well, throwing it out of balance and at times shutting it down. This type of psychological circumstance can produce severe symptoms such as dissociation, anxiety, depression, avoidance, hyper arousal, intrusive thoughts, and many other strange symptoms. It is because the memory is designed to be moved into long term memory and has remained in a place where it should not be stored. If you have been through a life changing event that has led to PTSD, you are likely aware that the symptoms will fluctuate according to your stress level. You are also likely aware that the symptoms can be overwhelming and can negatively affect your quality of life. This is why it is so important to seek treatment as early as possible. Many experts believe that post traumatic stress can be effectively dealt with and does not have to lead to PTSD if treated in a timely manner.

Article by Kristin Kronstain

Many people experience stress and anxiety in their everyday lives. Anxiety is inherent to living and can be part of having a job and establishing relationships with other people. Worrying about getting a project done at work or having a fight with a spouse can provoke anxiety in many people. These events, however, can be emotionally strengthening at times; they can widen your comfort zone and help clear up misunderstandings with others.

For some individuals, however, anxiety is ongoing. The feelings of nervousness and stress wear them down rather than building them up. These individuals carry fear with them every day. Anxiety overtakes them, preventing some sufferers from performing daily activities. The Report of the Surgeon General on Mental Health states that 16% of adults between the ages of 18 and 54 suffer from various anxiety disorders for at least one year. Generalized anxiety disorder, with its hallmark symptom of persistent anxiety in everyday situations, is quite common among adult anxiety patients.

Generalized anxiety disorder can be attributed to many factors. Environmental factors can contribute to high levels of anxiety. Unusual amounts of emotional stress from situations like separations, conflict, financial difficulties, and lack of support networks can cause anxiety disorders. Similarly, people who have experienced trauma have a higher risk of anxiety-related health issues. Heredity can partially determine brain chemical balance, as well. Furthermore, certain personality types are more prone to heightened symptoms of stress than others.

Many anxiety sufferers experience worry, tension, fatigue, and the sense that they are constantly ‘on edge.’ Even a prolonged, perpetual need for stimulation – including strong urges for coffee, alcohol, money, or praise – can be symptomatic of an anxiety disorder. And, chemicals, caffeine, and excess work, ironically, can all exacerbate anxiety symptoms.

Generalized anxiety disorder symptoms can be reduced with massage therapy

If you, like many Americans, are a person with a job and meaningful relationships, you will likely never fully rid yourself of stress. Effective therapy will teach you how to manage those symptoms. You should choose the type of anti-anxiety treatment that is best suited to your income level, time constraints, and personality. Some people choose anti-anxiety medications. Others choose psychotherapy or counseling. Still others choose natural treatments such as herbal remedies or massage therapy.

Many anxiety patients turn to — and have found relief in — natural treatments. Holistic and homeopathic medication can alleviate the symptoms associated with generalized anxiety disorder. Such treatments heal the body as a whole, taking the balance of physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the human system into consideration. Holistic therapies aim to remove toxins that facilitate the negative effects of stress. Other individuals turn to massage therapy or acupuncture to relieve anxiety. Massage can help break down built up toxins or waste in muscles, and often has a calming effect on anxious patients.

Some individuals are leery of certain treatments. For example, anxious patients who are afraid of drug side effects might wish to avoid psychotropic medications. Other patients might be reluctant to be touched by a specialist, so they might shy away from massage therapy.

Perhaps you have wanted to try massage therapy to treat your anxiety symptoms, but are reluctant or scared. The following tips might help you to relax:

How can you use massage therapy to fully treat your symptoms?

-First, be assured that uncomfortable situations are exceptionally rare when it comes to how you are treated by a massage therapist. These people are professionals who attended school to learn how to give you the best possible holistic treatment. Besides, massage therapists rely on repeated customers and referrals to succeed. They want you to have a positive experience.

-You do not have to be nervous about your massage therapist seeing your body. You can get massages where you are full clothed, totally nude, or anywhere in between. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of undressing, a massage while fully clothed massage might help you ease into the idea. You will see that the benefits far outweigh any negative impressions you may have. You may even request a masseuse of the same or opposite sex to make you more comfortable.

-Try not to talk while you are recieving your massage. Sometimes when people get nervous, they have the habit of chattering, which ultimately makes them more anxious. Try clearing your mind instead. Let your brain and your mouth relax, and the rest of your body will follow suit. Try not to think about work or your family — or anything else that might prevent the massage from having the best possible effect on you.

-Persistent pain or tension will be alleviated over time, so don’t give up on massage if you don’t see immediate results.

Massages will help relieve the tension associated with general anxiety disorder — but all of your symptoms will not be cured after the first or even second massage. It is also unrealistic to avoid your feelings of anxiety. Denial will not help you to cope with the problem areas in your life. You must create a whole mind-and-body strategy for handling stress.

Massage therapists go to school to become professionals who can offer natural alternatives for health concerns. Massage therapy training from Certified Careers Institute in Clearfield, Utah will provide you with a foundation for a career that can help many patients who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Distress, fear and worries are part of of everyday lives of huge number of anxiety disorders patients from all around the Planet. Normal fear and anxiety are an essential part of human existence. They help us to refrain from unpleasant and unsafe situations and therefore play warning or adaptive function.

The fear is always affiliated to a particular object or a situation and anxiety is an indeterminate emotional experience. The menace in Generalized Anxiety Disorder is less detectable, unclear, so it is usually described as a floating fear. If the fears, worries and anxiety start to dominate and control someones life, when they start to severely interfere with their home, social and business life, then we can say that the individual most likely suffers from an anxiety disorder.

Psychological symptoms of anxiety disorders are irrational fear and trembling, feeling of constant stress or internal turmoil, lack of concentration. The victim gets angry without a reason and can become extremely sensitive to noises. Also, in most cases anxiety disorder patients develop insomnia (they have big difficulties to have a rest, they wake up constantly during the night and could have bad dreams during their sleep.)

Common physical symptoms of anxiety disorders are: palpitations or skipping heart beats, feeling problems swallowing, dry mouth, difficulty breathing (lack of air), chest discomfort, frequent urge to go to the toilet, weakened sexual drive, noise in ears, pins and needles in fingers and toes, trembling hands and many more, depending on the persons.

Anxiety disorders could be grouped in seven main categories: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder also called Social Phobia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Specific Phobia and Agoraphobia.

The most common characteristics of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are: ongoing illogical worries, anxiety, fear and expectations of something horrible that might happen, that occur most of the days in a span of at least 2-6 months. The patients find uneasy to control their worries that are to a great extend exaggerated considering the situation. Adults suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder most of the time worry about everyday life, the responsibilities in the workplace, money, family wellbeing, unpleasant things that could happen to their kids, family members, close relatives etc.Irrational fear completely overwhelms the sufferers and makes them to feel paralyzed, helpless and under threat.

Generally speaking, GAD is best treated by blend of psychotherapy (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) and pills. Medications mostly used are Antidepressants from the group of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and at the beginning of the therapy Benzodiazepines. Some medication free therapies and programs developed by former sufferers are also achieving impressive results and can be purchased online.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is often associated with war veterans, but as a Seattle car accident lawyer, I have seen how this terrible psychological trauma can affect victims of auto accidents. Suffering from PTSD can have wide-ranging effects that can destroy relationships, job performance, and a person’s overall wellbeing.

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Definition

- S: (n) posttraumatic stress disorder, PTSD (an anxiety disorder associated with serious traumatic events and characterized by such symptoms as survivor guilt, reliving the trauma in dreams, numbness and lack of involvement with reality, or recurrent thoughts and images)

PTSD goes beyond a simple anxiety disorder or panic attack – it can stick with people for their entire lives. Some of the more common effects of PTSD are symptoms such as insomnia, flashbacks, hypervigilance, nightmares, depression, and a loss of interest in everyday activities. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder varies between people who suffer from it. Sometimes the disorder can result immediately after the accident, while other times it arises weeks, months or even years afterwards. What separates PTSD from a more typical anxiety disorder is that it is persistent and significantly disrupts the life of the victim.

Causes

While a typical anxiety disorder can sometimes be caused simply by irrational fears, PTSD must be triggered by a significant level of trauma or a singular event. It takes some kind of physical or physiological trauma to lead to PTSD.

This trauma can involve:

- Death threats directed at oneself or a loved one- war trauma- a serious car accident- abuse or assault- Rape- Childhood Neglect- Natural Disasters- Death of a loved one

PTSD occurs because of the same fight or flight mechanism we have that guides many of our daily decisions. In the case of someone suffering from this disorder, however, the adrenaline and fear that are associated with this mechanism can be sparked by the mere thought of a previous traumatic experience. This moment in someone’s life can cause an overactive adrenaline response in situations that do not call for it. If this happens relatively frequently and over a long period of time, it is a clear case of PTSD.

There are a variety of treatment options for post-traumatic stress syndrome patiens, including counseling, eye movement desensitization, cognitive and behavioral therapy, and medications.

If you have been in an auto accident and are noticing potential signs of PTSD, you should contact a medical professional as soon as possible. It is also a good idea to seek compensation for these mental scars if the accident was someone else’s fault. Contact an experienced Bellevue injury lawyer and schedule a free consultation to discuss your case.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder affecting those who have experienced very traumatic events. People with PTSD suffer high levels of anxiety and bouts of depression. Normal day to day life for people with PTSD also gets disrupted by panic episodes or “flashbacks,” where they remember and relive the emotions and thoughts they had during the original trauma.Signs of PTSDThe most common signs of PTSD, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, include:· Chronic anxiety, where victims experience periods of depression and acute panic attacks;· Flashbacks, where victims recall snippets of the traumatic event;· Sleep disturbances, where victims experience disruptive nightmares and difficulty sleeping;· Avoidance, where victims avoid certain people, places, and situations that they associate with the traumatic event;· Dissociation/Derealization, where victims feel disconnected from other people and from the latest happenings around them, and where they also feel that past or present events didn’t actually happen; and· Hyper-vigilance, where victims feel the need to be constantly on their guard.A few people also suffer from amnesia or memory loss after the trauma. The more persistent and the more serious the PTSD signs and symptoms means the longer one has been exposed to trauma. The National Center for PTSD relates that an estimated 8% of the population will experience Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder at some point in their lives. However, it says, females are twice more likely to seek professional intervention for PTSD than boys afflicted with the disorder. History of PTSD and Risk FactorsThe American Psychiatric Association says that PTSD was first considered as a legitimate psychiatric problem and listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual in 1980. However, the APA notes, doctors and people in the military have long been aware of the condition. The National Institute of Mental Health says that 19% of soldiers who have fought in a war come home with PTSD. The statistic gets higher with repeated tours of duty, like the ones served by American military men in Afghanistan and Iraq.According to the NIMH, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is also seen in people who have survived accidents or major catastrophic events, like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. PTSD is also common among people who have been victims of or have witnessed murder, criminal or domestic violence, and sexual abuse.Treatment and PrognosisA form of PTSD known as Complex PTSD is unique to people who have experienced prolonged and severe trauma. C-PTSD often comes with other psychological problems, making treatment more difficult. If PTSD is identified and treated immediately after the traumatic event, then it usually gets resolved within 3 months. However, signs of PTSD usually do not appear until up to 6 months post-trauma. In some instances, as in the case of long-lasting trauma and C-PTSD, the first signs do not manifest until some years after. In such delayed cases, recovery relies on the individual, as well as on the length of the trauma and the severity of the symptoms. C-PTSD may become a chronic problem and will necessitate long-term care, but most cases resolve in due course with the right kind of intervention.Prognosis for total recovery from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after treatment is excellent.
