A growing number of people are suffering from post traumatic stress, or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as it is commonly referred to, and this is making the condition much more known throughout the world. It is a condition that is both psychological and physical which has been triggered by frightening or distressing instances in life. There is no need for a person to have physically witnessed the events to suffer from this condition although this is still the more likely reason why people suffer from the condition.

There are many different situations where people can end up suffering from post traumatic stress with military combat being an area where this issue is growing. With greater numbers of people witnessing action in combat and witnessing many scenes of terror, it is perhaps understandable that there has been a rise in this condition. It is also the fact that although many military personnel may return from service physically unscathed, they may have many mental scars and issues which can cause difficulty in later life.

Another area where a person can suffer from post traumatic stress is through a serious road accident. This can be where the person is involved in the accident or was witness to it. Everyone responds to accidents in their own way and sometimes people are unable to cope with what they saw. This can manifest itself at the time or it can cause the sufferer a great deal of pain and discomfort in later periods of life. There is a growing acceptance that many people, although they coped well with the situation at the time may struggle over a lengthier period of time with what they witnessed.

Other areas where a person may suffer post traumatic stress from can include violent assault, sexual assault, muggings, robbery, hostage situations or being witness to natural or man-made disasters. The latter examples are also being cited by people who did not witness these events in person but were exposed to them through the blanket media coverage that so often covers these events today. There are so many ways that people can suffer from post traumatic stress disorder and it is becoming ever more important to have a greater understanding of the condition. This has led to a greater study into this field in an attempt to gain a better understanding of the suffering that people have and what can be done to improve their condition.
