How can I manage my obsessive compulsive disorder besides medication?

I have had obsessive compulsive disorder for about a year now, and have been on Zoloft for about 6 months. How can I manage my disorder besides the medication?

I don’t know..when u do the “rituals”..repetitive stuff..what do you specifically think will happen if you don’t do it? Cuz NOTHING will happen! You will be fine. Keep going to the doctor and taking the medication prescribed.

If your OCD makes you dysfunctional as far as your inability to hold a job or otherwise care for and be responsible for yourself, than it needs to be managed but if you just have certain things that you have to do or milder forms of OCD I have found that accommodating those behaviors while potentially annoying to some people, are completely harmless and therefore is not anything that needs to be “managed”. Doctors are so quick to prescribe meds and then pull them off the market 3-5 years later because of the side effects, I think it’s more dangerous to take the meds with tall the potential side effects than any damage the vast majority of OCD behaviors could ever cause.
Its not easy!!! But I have OCD with cleaning, and found myself getting home from a 12 hour day to clean for another 4 hours or so before I felt comfortable in my own home! I talked to my doctor about it and they can not put me on meds, due to another medical condition so he suggested that I occupy my time in another way. Such as readings or meditating, do something that you like to do. And when you start feeling all funny about the cleaning (or whatever you are compulsive about) then refocus on your current project. If you have to be compulsive, try to do it only minimally. It wasn’t over night that I just stopped cleaning… but now I can come home and only do one load of laundry instead of 3, and i can KNOW that there are still 2 left. It was a horrible feeling at first then I felt more accomplished after I took control. I always tell myself now, there is always tomorrow for the wash, vacuuming, etc… and today…I did all I could. Find a therapist who specializes or is at least familiar in treating OCD. I have found that using Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy is greatly beneficial in treating OCD. There is also an OCD workbook that I’ve used, you can purchase it at Barnes & Noble or Borders and it costs under $20.
A psychologist, (not to be confused with a psychiatrist) can help you understand WHY it is you do that and WHAT the triggers are. Once you know these things, you can begin to understand how to control it. Why you should go to a psychologist instead of a psychiatrist is cuz a psychiatrist is good for symptoms and medication while a psychologist is good for talk therapy. My advice would be to seek talk therapy with a psychologist. Good luck!
well when people had OCD they do different stuff to obsess about and idk what u do but just try ur best not to do it or skip taking the pill sometimes then start taking it less and less to overcome it! GOOD LUCK! IT MUST BE HARD!
zoloft isnt all that powerfull of a drug. just stop doing it or live with it
see a phyciastrist.Im currently seeing one and they have turned my life around for the best. Ive had ocd for 7 years from the age of 7. and weeks after i saw them it just disserped. it really helps.
Unfortunately, you are the lucky recipient of a miswired brain. I also received one, but have been very successful in managing my symptoms. The key is to have a good psychologist who specializes in OCD and also a good psychiatrist who knows his medications and is willing to work with you to find the right one. If the medication you are on is giving you side effects, try another. Think of OCD as being like diabetes……it does not just disappear, but can be controlled with the proper medication and diet( therapy). A good sense of humour is key…learn to laugh at yourself. Also, people with OCD make the best accountants and doctors. It can be a plus. : )
