Question by : How do I overcome my shyness and social phobia?
I am 25 years old and I have been dealing with shyness and social phobia almost all my life. I am still a college student and it’s hard for me to talk to people. Some people have said I have this “stank” expression on my face, like I’m always mad. This offended me. how do i overcome this?

Best answer:

Answer by Sweet tooth magee.
I know you’re shy, but people these days don’t have the decency to try to be nice and talk to people. Therefore, if you want to overcome this and make friends, you have to make the first move. If there’s someone you’ve been dying to talk to, just tell them that you’re shy, but you’d like to get to know them better. Or an even better way to start, is to greet everyone you see with a smile! This way, the same people won’t think you’re “always mad” and they’ll want to approach you in a more friendly manner. Good luck!

Question by mousylil: What can you do to make yourself sleep easier?
What cam you do to make yourself sleep when your can’t? Should you walk around your room or drink milk or just stare at the ceiling like an idiot until you sleep?

Best answer:

Answer by Jill S
What you should do is after 6pm have no caffeine, nothing that is going to stimulate you. Walking around tends to give energy so I would recommend that. Maybe lay in your bed with the lights off with soft music on, don’t eat right before you go to bed. If this is not able to help you, you can always take Tylenol PM, but can become very addictive. There are also other sleep aids that you can take to help you fall asleep easier. Also you can talk to your doctor.

Question by kimpenn09: How has your doctor/therapist treated your agoraphobia?
My therapist suggested today that I might be agoraphobic, mainly because I have trouble leaving and staying away from my apartment and feel very uncomfortable outside of the safety of familiar places and faces. (I won’t go into details.) I am wondering what kind of therapy other agoraphobics have received. I am in traditional psychotherapy now, but think I might benefit better from cognitive behavioral therapy, both for this and my OCD/depression.

Best answer:

Answer by gurlieak
I was a prisoner in my own home for two years back in the 1970′s. The treatment for agoraphobia was not very good back then but, I found an article in the readers digest that told about desensitization sessions. It was the most difficult thing I have ever done but, with help and family support I made it to the classes. I found out I was not alone (huge Epiphany).
I found this for you:
Go online and find a therapist in your area who specializes in phobias. Or call the National Mental Health Association at 800-969-NMHA for help with affordable referrals.
I wish you the best.

Question by piratewench: What treatment is possible for anxiety disorders?
I’m going to a psychologist in two weeks. I think I have an anxiety disorder (constant and illogical worry and nervousness over silly things or nothing at all, often to the point of making myself sick). Anyway, if I am diagnosed I’m curious about the possible treatments I may encounter. And if anyone knows of a support forum it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Laura P
I have suffered from general anxiety disorder for about 5 years now, so I know what you are going through. I saw a therapist for a year, and was also placed on anti-depressants. They allow you to control the illogical thoughts that can control your life. I also learned a lot of breathing and relaxation techniques that help me to calm myself down before my fears get out of control.

Honestly, the medication helps the most, and if I didn’t take it I’d still feel like I was going crazy. Good luck, and remember that you aren’t alone in this!

Question by Anonymous: How to get rid of an anxiety disorder without meds or therapist?
I believe I have an anxiety disorder because I am constantly worrying, constant headaches, stomach pain from nerves sometimes, and I constantly think about everything I do wrong. I don’t want my dad to know or for him to worry so I don’t want to tell him. Please, how can I overcome this?

Best answer:

Answer by Maeve Massacre
Anexity is sometimes a serious issue. if you let anxiety take over or you don’t get it in control properly its highly likely that you will develop panic attacks. which you don’t want.

i’ve been in your shoes. no medicine and no therapy. i thought it would just go away. well it didn’t. i now have panic attack every night and unless you wanna feel like your literally dying every night or day then i highly suggest you at least go to some type of therapy.

if its caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain then no. its not possibly for it to go away on its own and even stress release exercises won’t make it go away.

you need to see someone.
dont let this run your life cuz stress will kill you.

Question by Art_fashion_love: What causes people to get anxiety disorders?
What is it that causes people to form anxiety disorders later in their life? Like any particular situations of characteristics of people who develop these disorders? Besides general stress… What previous situations in someones life might make them more susceptible to developing an anxiety disorder later in life?

Best answer:

Answer by Miranda Killgallen™
The development of an anxiety disorder typically results from an interaction between certain biological and environmental risk factors that are unique to each individual. Genetics play an important role in determining who will develop an anxiety disorder, as does a child’s temperament, or innate personality style. Studies show, for example, that children who are innately cautious, quiet, and shy are more likely to develop an anxiety disorder.

Question by Ann: How can I help resolve my anxiety attacks?
I am currently on 150mg/day of EffexorXR for depression and anxiety. However, lately I have had panic attacks or anxiety attacks at least every other day. I begin feeling short of breathe, my hands start to shake and I get very antsy. I cannot take another 150 tablet during the day, but I would like to know other methods of relaxing or calming myself down (possibly without medication).
I have been on effexor for about 2 years and I have been in counseling for the same amount of time.

Answer by Danielle
I used to have the same problem. Try laying on a cold surface, such as a bare stone floor and shutting your eyes. Take long, slow breaths and try not to hyperventilate. Also, after such an attack (or regularily) you may want to take yoga as a stress release. Peppermint tea also has a slight calming effect. Hope this helps!

Question by Grace[:: What are some ways that can help me calm my nerves?
Usually whenever i get nervous or something i start to feel really sick. such as my stomach gets real queasy, i have hot flashes, and anxious. and if i have anything in my stomach i will sometimes throw it up depending on how stressed i am. I feel really bad and just wish it would go away it doesn’t go away until i have either done whatever i was nervous about but i cant always just go and do whats making me nervous. so anyone have tips on how i can just relax and calm my nerves? it would be really helpful for me :) thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Claire?
Well, hon, you may just have an anxiety disorder if this happens frequently. But if not, many people go through your same problems when they get nervous. Here are some tips to calm your nerves:

1)Begin with the most popular ways to calm your nerves. Incorporate one or more of the following into your life (one of the most familiar techniques): yoga, tai chi, music, hypnosis, exercise and massage.

2)Autogenic relaxation. Autogenic means something that comes from within you. In this technique, you use both visual imagery and body awareness to reduce stress. You repeat words or suggestions in your mind to help you relax and reduce muscle tension. You may imagine a peaceful place and then focus on controlled, relaxing breathing, slowing your heart rate, or different physical sensations, such as relaxing each arm or leg one by one.

3)Progressive muscle relaxation. In this technique, you focus on slowly tensing and then relaxing each muscle group. This helps you focus on the difference between muscle tension and relaxation, and you become more aware of physical sensations. You may choose to start by tensing and relaxing the muscles in your toes and progressively working your way up to your neck and head. Tense your muscles for at least five seconds and then relax for 30 seconds and repeat.

4)Visualization. In this technique, you form mental images to take a visual journey to a peaceful, calming place or situation. Try to use as many senses as you can, including smells, sights, sounds and textures. If you imagine relaxing at the ocean, for instance, think about the warmth of the sun, the sound of crashing waves, the feel of the grains of sand and the smell of salt water. You may want to close your eyes, sit in a quiet spot and loosen any tight clothing.

5)Quick fix. If you feel stressed take a few moments out. Watch and be aware of your breathing. Breathe naturally and gently; this will have a very powerful, calming influence on your mind. When you breathe in, feel that you are breathing in inner peace. When you breathe out, feel you are exhaling all your anxieties and worries. Relaxation can be this simple and it doesn’t have to be complicated at all.

I hope this helped you.

Question by Word: What kinda body changes can you experience during anxiety attacks?
I had an anxiety attack about two and a half yrs ago and had a strange body change.
My whole lower abdomen exploded like it swelled up with in seconds of it happening.
Does anyone know why this would happen?
Or what I can do about it?

Best answer:

Answer by Jennifer
Hi.Well, you said this anxiety attack you has was over 2 years ago. So,now your asking what you can do about it? Nothing you can do about it since it took place well over 2 years ago. But,what I can try to answer is why this happened. And,the reason why your stomach swelled up….it was due to the instant reaction of your entire body and muscles right at that moment when you first started having your anxiety attack..When this happens our muscles tense up,and for many people their muscles get so tense/tight….And,this might have been what happened to your stomach…it expanded out,and tensed up and stayed that way until your anxiety attack ended.I will clear 1 thing up also….your stomach did not explode…it just expanded, and tensed up until the anxiety attack ended.Take care….try to keep in mind? This happened well over 2 years ago….so try not to get so worked up over something that took place so long ago.The more you start stressing out over this..the more anxiety and stress your going to have. You don’t want that.Right? Relax…and enjoy the day…All the best.

Answer by CB
An evalution done by a clincal psychologist or a psychiatrist can diagnose any mental illness, SAD and GAD included. Theres no real “test” they have certain questions they ask and a specifc way or criteria for diagnosing any mental illness. And id recomend not relying on a normal doctor about things to do with mental illness, they arent specialists and dont have th right tools to help you as much as a psychologist or psychiatrist does. Good luck :)

Question by LILi Rodri: How to do CBT during social interaction?
I have a form of social anxiety disorder. I’m trying to do Cognitive behavioral therapy, but I find it hard to do it while I’m interacting with someone.
When you’re talking to someone, you have to listen, and say something back!
How can I think and rationalize what I’m feeling when at the same time I have to pay attention to what the person is saying, and thinking about what I’m going to respond to the person?? It’s overwhelming!
Can anyone help me with some pratical tips? Thanks!!

Best answer:

Answer by athousandstars
Multitasking. Your brains much more powerful and able than you think.

Just when you go to think something negative eg. “he will think i’m an idiot” or ” i bet they think my clothes are ugly” or ” they think i’m weird” counteract it, reason with those thoughts, ” well they havent said my clothes are ugly” ” if they really thought i was that weird they wouldnt be talking to me”

You’ll get the hang of it.
Here’s a website that helped me: http://www.moodgym.anu.edu.au/welcome it basically trains you in CBT and makes you a pro at it lol. It’s a program that you can just sign up to. Use it.

Question by Desielle: What happens when you have aspergers, bipolar disorder, anxiety, social phobia, and ADD and you get pregnant?
I have aspergers, bipolar disorder, anxiety, social phobia, and ADD. I am on a lot of meds for my mental illnesses. My boyfriend and I have been talking about kids, way down the road though. I was just wondering what it’s like for women with mental disorders like mine to get pregnant and have babies. Is it worth it to be off your meds for 9 months or is it too hard? Would I have to bottle feed or could I breast feed? How much stress did it put on your relationship with your husband or boyfriend? Was it hard to get pregnant and carry a healthy baby to term?

Best answer:

Answer by Cjmjm2
Most anxiety/depression medication causes deformities so you will probably have to get weaned off of your pills before getting pregnant.

You have to talk about that with your doctor on how that can affect you. Don’t just stop taking it on your own or it may cause you to have a seizure or other serious health problems (I know Zoloft, Prozac, Lexapro and many other pills like that can cause this effect, if you stop taking them. So be really careful. I have aspergers and I’ve been weaned off of different medicines over the years and it doesn’t end up good. Actually the mental stress that you will feel after stopping those pills could cause miscarriages. Your best option is probably to get a surrogate. They will use your eggs and his sperm and put it inside of another lady so she can have your baby for you.

www.yangtown.com Part 2 is no longer available. In this video you will help you learn a simple treatment to cure social anxiety disorder, overcome shyness, and stop any social phobia in a way that is easy and gentle. We will use a combination of 2 powerful techniques that have been proven to be effective in reducing social anxiety or social phobia, and eliminating the symptoms of it such as panic attacks, anxiety attacks, or just plain old self-consciousness. The 1st technique is called Emotional Freedom Technique (or EFT for short). It’s a simple process of tapping on different acupressure points on your body while saying certain phrases related to the fear of social situations. I have used this process for years, both on myself and with many clients (in therapy/coaching sessions), and have witnessed profound and rapid healing of mental and emotional issues like these. I have personally used it for my own social anxiety and have had great success with it. If you would like detailed instructions for the steps in EFT, please visit www.YangTown.com In the 2nd part of this video, we will use a second, more powerful technique known as the Tapas Acupressure Technique, to clear away social anxiety on a deeper level. **Update** I had to remove the second part for legal reasons.

What is it called if somebody has eye contact phobia? (fear of making eye contact) I heard its called eyelight phobia but Im not sure.

Best answer:

Answer by Alethia MD
There are so many specific phobias, that it’s not possible to have a especif name for all of them.
The DSM (the psychiatry bible) has some specific ones, like agoraphobia, for other less common phobias, they call it “Simple specific phobia to ______” Simple, because there’s no association to any other psychiatry disorder.

Question by Adamsman: How do I explain to my parents what it is like to have an anxiety disorder in a way they would understand?
They have tried to understand my anxiety since I was a kid but even now, in my late 20′s, I don’t think they understand what it is like to be scared all the time or feeling unsafe in the world. Often I get, let go of that. I am in therapy but even there they only understand bits and pieces of it. They know I can not help having the anxiety disorders but they also feel it is a matter of “not letting myself worry”. I am full of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder with the OCD being mostly in the obsessive only form though some reassurance compulsions exist.

Best answer:

Answer by Layla
ok so i have an anxiety problem to and if i were going to explain it to someone i would say it is a chemical imbalance in my brain and i can not controll it
