A phobia is an irrational, persistent fear of a certain object or situation. There are several different forms of a phobia. A phobia can be a fear of something specific such as flying or a social phobia which causes an individual to feel anxiety about a social situation. Examples of a specific phobia may involve a fear of small animals, closed in spaces and snakes. Social phobias would be a fear of giving a speech, talking to the boss or meeting new people.
It is estimated that over five percent of the population has one or more clinically diagnosed phobias. A phobia usually begins in childhood and continues into adulthood. Some phobias, if left untreated, can debilitate a person. For example someone with agoraphobia, a fear of the outside world, is unable to leave their house. It is important to deal with a phobia head on in order to rid yourself of your fear. Hypnosis is a proven method to cure phobias.

What actually causes phobia? Well, as reported on listofphobias. org Phobia is a negative emotional disorder, caused by an interaction between biological and environmental factors. Such factors include emotional trauma, unpleasant situation and negative experiences that often become imprinted in a person’s memory. These unpleasant memories are converted to fear after some repetitions with the same situations and consequently make the person become phobic. Treatment of phobias might be in form of psychotherapy referred to as cognitive behavior therapy. Cognitive behavior therapy may involve exposure to very thing that cause the phobia. Within this type of therapy, the individual gradually works up the strength to face the situations he or she fears most.
This allows the individual to become better skilled at coping with these anxiety inducing situations and to develop the confidence to face their fear. There is another type of treatment that involves the use of medication and therapy combine together. When these types of therapy are combines oftentimes the person that is suffering will experience relief very fast. Some of the negative points of medication are side effects and finding the right type of medication that will work for the individual. A good number of individual, suffer from one kind of phobia or another. Just as the saying that a certain man’s poison is another mans happiness, what may be phobia for me personally may not be for you and does not occur in children more than adults. Adults suffer from phobias too although childhood phobias occur most commonly between the ages of 5 and 9 and tend to fade as the child starts to grow older. By definition, phobia is an intense, uncontrollable, irrational and persistent fear of something that poses little or no actual danger.

Have you experienced an intense fear of a certain object, animal, or person that you’ll do anything just to avoid coming into contact with it? Does this fear overwhelm you to a point that you cannot function normally? You may be part of the 8.7 to 18.1% of the American population that’s suffering from phobia.
The word phobia was derived from the Greek word Phobos which means fear. It is an intense, persistent fear of certain situations, activities, objects, or persons. It usually manifests as an extreme, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. This differs from normal fear as it already interferes with a person’s regular daily life. This mental condition falls under one of the anxiety disorders. And this condition is common among women in different age groups, and it is the second most common mental illness among men older than twenty-five.
