Panic attack is a period of intensive fear that is often abrupt and is often a sign of mental and emotional distress.
In some individuals they appear without apparent cause and most often the distressed individual reports loosing control of oneself. Often they are provoked or triggered by a sense of trying to escape from someone or from the place where the attack started. Although in normal cases, the individual when subjected to a stimulus often resorts to a fight syndrome as a form of protection, in panic attacks, the individual employs the flight syndrome. Often episodes of panic attack come with chest pain and shortness of breath with a tunnel vision even after seeking medical advice or attention.

Panic attack is different from other anxiety disorders because of its sudden intensity and its occurrence in individuals. Often panic attacks are psychological conditions but may not be a sign of a mental disorder. At least in normal individuals, a panic attack may occur in a year particularly in persons with anxiety and phobias. As a result of a triggering factor, they are often short-lived and will subside once the triggering factor is eliminated. In some individuals exposed to a panic attack, one attack may trigger another leading to a nervous breakdown.

Scientific studies point out to the imbalance of serotonin and norepinephrine as the culprits in the incidence of panic attacks where the neurological function is subjected to a chemical imbalance. Often genetics play a role in the disorder and has been found to run in families.

Common symptoms include trembling, palpitations, and shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness, hyperventilation and tingling sensations. Others develop a sense of being choked or smothered. In repeated and unprovoked panic attacks a sign or manifestation of a panic disorder may ensue. However panic attacks are also associated with other common anxiety disorders like in persons with phobias whose exposure to their feared object or scenario trigger an attack.

Panic attacks are potentially disabling, but it can be controlled. The various symptoms of a panic attack are often mistaken as a cardiac attack or a life-threatening medical illness. This misconception often increases the incidence of future panic attacks. People often submit to the hospital emergency rooms when they are having a panic attack, and extensive medical tests are performed to rule out other conditions, which creates further anxiety.

Treatment for panic attacks includes medications and psychotherapy. Normally the mental health practitioners assisting you in the treatment of panic disorder are psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. To submit for a medical treatment for panic disorder however, one should visit a psychiatrist. Psychotherapy may be provided by a clinical or counseling psychologist. Medications can also be used to break any psychological connection between a specific phobia and panic attacks.

Common medications prescribed are antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs in anticipation or during a panic attack.
Some psychologists believe that usual exposure to the phobia trigger with medical assistance can often break the phobia-panic pattern, allowing people to gradually adjust to the stressor without the help of medications. However, minor phobias that develop as a result of a panic attack can be prevented without medication through behavioral therapy or simply by assisted exposure.

Under a combination of therapy and medications, the best results are often seen. For some, a fair improvement may be noticed in a short period of less than 8 weeks. Finding the right pair of medications and mental health professional takes more effort. Appropriate treatment by an experienced professional can often prevent panic attacks or at least reduce its severity and frequency.

Other panic attacks caused by an underlying emotional problem like depression, alcoholism and drug addiction are more frequent in people with panic disorder. The underlying problem needs to be treated before the total panic disorder is completely or at least partially eliminated.

Most less severe and less recurrent attacks submitted to the emergency rooms are advised to breath in paper bags to help boost the carbon dioxide levels in the body.

So…what exactly is panic attack and why do people start having them suddenly? The fact is this, panic attack can start for many reasons such as stress, overworking, angst, etc. The significance of this is that panic attack can strike anytime and anywhere for no apparent reason at all.

This is why people can get confused and thinks that they are going to die when experiencing panic attack for the first time. They start to associate panic attack with the situation they are in and avoid that particular situation. They start to think that they are in danger and they “know” they are going to faint or “have a heart attack”, which is totally untrue!

Their heart is pounding so hard that it feels like its going to burst – heart attack? WRONG! This is the symptoms of panic attack, it feel like a heart attack but its not, its just a panic reaction of the human body. Your supposed to feel that way when your panicking.

During “normal” panic reaction, adrenaline is produced by the body. Adrenaline is produced in case your faced with a dangerous or a stressful situation. Increase in heart rate and breathing, hands and legs start shaking, etc, these are all effect of adrenaline. During a panic attack, the body misinterpret the situation as dangerous and produced adrenaline for no reason, as a result you start to feel all sorts of uncomfortable symptoms.

In order to control panic attack and get rid of it forever, you must “rewind” yourself. The body needs to know that the situation is not dangerous at all and there’s no need for the panic reaction. For example, some panic attack sufferers avoid public transport because of several incidents in taxis which resulted in their panic attack and therefore start associating any public transport with fear and panic. This is where “rewinding” comes in. They need to tell their brain that there’s nothing wrong or dangerous about public transport and it doesn’t need to start a panic reaction.

The fact is this…learning how to stop the fear is the KEY to getting rid of a panic attack. Remind yourself about the FACTS about panic attack:

-Panic attack CANNOT cause heart attack

-Panic attack CANNOT cause suffocation

-Panic attack CANNOT cause fainting

-Panic attack CANNOT cause you to go mad/crazy

-Panic attack CANNOT cause you to die

As you can see, panic attack CANNOT harm you. You will ALWAYS be fine and nothing will happen to you.

Panic attacks is defined as a sudden attack of intense fear and terror along with symptoms of weakness, rapid and irregular heart beat, difficulty in breathing, clamminess and losing the sense of reality.

The first panic attack usually comes out of nowhere. You could be doing something that you do every day like driving, shopping, walking in the park, watching a movie, etc.

The main problem with these attacks is that once you have had one, the fear of having another panic attack will cause it to happen again. Just the fear of having a panic attack is often enough to trigger another one. In fact, most people who have panic attacks think that they are going crazy, have a heart attack, or dieing. In actual fact, they are in perfect physical condition.

In order to control panic attacks and get rid of it forever, you must first learn to accept it. Most panic attack sufferers fear having another panic attack. They run away and hide from it. They try to avoid situation which they think trigger their attacks. Learn to live with the panic attacks but NEVER give in.

The only way to get rid of panic attacks is to confront them. Never run or hide from it. Panic attacks feed on fear and anxiety. The more your afraid of having a panic attack, the harder and faster it will strike. Panic attacks represent the conflict of you being afraid of the way you reacting. If you didn’t feel that way, then you would have no more panic attacks!

Next time, during a panic attack, try to confront it head on. Don’t run, hide or avoid it. Accept that you have panic attack and confront it!

Calm down by reminding yourself that these odds sensations are part of a panic attack. Your NOT having a heart attack. Your NOT dieing.

Panic attack can be stopped and you can recover from it without depending on drugs. Understand that panic attack occur again and again because of your fear of them. Fear act as fuels for panic attack and makes it happen. Take away that fear and panic attack will never happen again!

Panic attacks can have a significant impact in your life and can even interfere with your work and social relationships. They can range from mild to debilitating, preventing you from going out and doing the things you normally did. They can also place a dent in your self-esteem. It is important that you know how to control panic attacks. If you want to conquer your panic attacks, here are some tips on how to control panic attacks:

Find the trigger.
All panic attacks have a trigger. Find out what yours is . Panic attacks usually occur during times of stress or times when you feel helpless or confined. Closed spaces and small quarters, for example, can trigger a panic attack. So will the thought of facing a group of people whether for a meeting, presentation or public speech.

Learn to find the pattern of occurrence of your attacks and you\’ll be better at predicting them. If you know what causes your panic attacks, you can better prepare for them before they occur and be able to control panic attacks and your negative feelings.

Learn relaxation techniques.
Relaxation techniques help train the mind to control itself in situations where panic attacks usually occur. By learning to relax, you teach your body to follow your mind and control panic attacks.

Learn meditation or self-hypnosis, which are both effective for helping you clear your mind and reduce muscle tension and heart rate. They also work well with helping you gain better control of your breathing and your reactions in case of another panic attack. Practice these techniques for at least 20 minutes everyday to control panic attacks.

Learn to breathe properly.
Breathing is the key to learning how to control panic attacks. Learn the proper technique by lying on a flat surface or sitting on a chair. By keeping your spine straight and closing your eyes, picture your diaphragm as your center.

Place a hand over the area and draw in a breath slowly, using a count of 5 and then breathe out slowly. Repeat this for at least 20 times until you find your rhythm and your body begins to relax. During this exercise, think of being in a peaceful and safe place and repeat to yourself reassuring statements such as, \”I am in a safe place. Nothing will harm me. There is no danger to my person. I am safe.\”

Next time a panic attack threatens you, use this breathing technique to calm yourself. Regardless of where you are, remember this technique and use it to control panic attacks.

Check your diet.
Diet plays a big part in making you more susceptible to panic and anxiety attacks. Certain foods like caffeine, salt and nicotine for example, should be taken in moderation. Caffeine and nicotine are known stimulants and can increase your nervousness and agitation while salt hinders the normal functioning of the nervous system.

Get enough sleep.
If you suffer from panic attacks, make sure you get a good rest every night. If your body is well rested, your mental and physical abilities are more in tuned to each other when you wake up. You are less likely to react without thinking or give in to panic attacks if you\’re refreshed and feeling in control.

See a doctor.
If your panic attacks are severe, it might be time to seek professional help to control panic attacks. Some symptoms can be too much even for you to handle, in which case you might benefit from prescription medication or even professional counseling to control panic attacks. Don’t be afraid to seek help. You are not alone in your condition and there are a lot of sources you can turn to for assistance if you will only ask.

If you have tried everything and spend a fortune to control panic attacks and yet found no cure, don’t despair. Did you know that you can free yourself from panic attacks today? Regardless of what you have been led to believe acute anxiety and panic attacks can be cured in easy-to-follow steps without any medication using a revolutionary new technique.

Panic disorder is a common condition in which a person has episodes of intense fear or anxiety that occur suddenly. Panic attacks can indicate the presence of panic disorder, depression, or other forms of anxiety-based illnesses. A panic attack typically lasts for several minutes and is one of the most distressing conditions that a person can experience. Panic attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep. An attack generally peaks within 10 minutes, but some symptoms may last much longer. At least 1.7% of adult Americans, or about 3 million people, will have panic attacks at some time in their lives. Panic attacks may be symptoms of an anxiety disorder. These attacks are a serious health problem in this country. About 5% of the population will experience panic attacks during their lifetimes. There also appears to be a connection with major life transitions such as graduating from college and entering the workplace, getting married, and having a baby. Severe stress, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, or job loss can also trigger a panic attack.

More women than men are affected by panic attacks. Some people are affected by frequent panic attacks, a condition known as panic disorder. A panic attack is a response of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). The most common symptoms may include: trembling, dyspnea(shortness of breath), heart palpitations, chest pain (or chest tightness), sweating, nausea, dizziness (or slight vertigo), light-headedness, hyperventilation, paresthesias (tingling sensations), sensations of choking or smothering. Many of the symptoms that occur during a panic attack are the same as the symptoms of diseases of the heart, lungs, intestines or nervous system. The similarities between panic disorder and other diseases may add to the person’s fear and anxiety during and after a panic attack. Heredity, stress and certain biochemical factors may play a role. Several medicines can make panic attacks less severe or stop them altogether. Paroxetine (brand name: Paxil) and sertraline (brand name: Zoloft) are antidepressant medicines that have been approved by the U.S.

Medications from the beta blocker family (for example, propranolol) are sometimes used to treat the physical symptoms associated with a panic attack. Antidepressants are very effective in preventing anxiety and panic attacks. Antidepressants will not make you lose control or change your personality. These medicines can be used for as long as necessary, even for years. Alprazolam and clonazepam (brand name: Klonopin) are also medicines approved by the FDA to treat panic disorder. These medicines give relief from fear and anxiety. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps people learn to deal with panic symptoms, using techniques like muscle and breathing relaxation. Antidepressants, such as Tofranil, often help reduce anxiety and the frequency and severity of panic attacks. Psychotherapy offers support and helps to minimize the fearfulness of symptoms, and sometimes is sufficient to clear up the disorder.

Panic Attack Treatment Tips

1. Alternative treatments like meditation and relaxation therapy are often used to help relax the body and relieve anxiety.

There are many ways to stop panic attack. If you are anxious about how you could put an end to such an embarrassing and alarming situation, it would be appropriate if you would be reminded that indeed, you could do something to alleviate the disadvantages and setbacks you encounter by the inconvenient disorder. Stop panic attack and have and live a more normal life.

If you are aiming to put an end to panic attack, you should do the necessary measures right away. Stop panic attack and live your life fully. If you are anxious and worrisome that you know nothing about the endeavor, read on and discover practical ways on how you could stop panic attack.

A panic attack is borne mentally. In some form, the situation can be classified as a form of mental disorder. But do not get it wrong. A panic attack is not at all leading and directly related to insanity. A patient r sufferer from a panic attack may seem like he or she is going crazy and uncontrollable. Understand that a panic attack is a product of too much anxiety and fear taking over one’s overall personality. Stop panic attack by observing the following.

Control yourself

First, if you suspect you are having an episode of panic attack, hold control of yourself. Paranoia and extreme fear is part of the manifestations of panic attack. In most cases, patients feel breathless, restless and really tense. At its worse, panic attack often induces a feeling as if death is near. Thus, there is extreme and further fear. In such cases, overall relaxation and self assurance would be necessary. Stop panic attack from further doing harm to yourself by relaxing at the onset of an attack. Meditate, practice quietness and simply relax.

A panic attack may last a few minutes to as long as several hours. To ensure yourself, it would help if you would seek medical and expert help. Doing so is not just ensuring safety but is also psychologically giving assurance that everything will be alright. Often, panic attack patients mistake their attacks for something else, probably a heart attack. This suspicion might further affect and worsen the condition. If an expert or doctor would give assurance that the condition is only panic attack, the patient may be more assured that everything is controllable.

Medications and therapies

There are also certain prescribed medications that will instantly prompt treatment. You could abruptly stop panic attack by taking in prescribed medicines, usually depressants, like serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazpines and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Such depressants help lower the rapid heart beat that is greatly contributing to further onset and possible setbacks of panic attacks.

Also, stop panic attacks by avoiding alcohol, illicit drugs and most especially coffee, especially when there is already an onset of the episode. Some people commit the error of taking in such substances at the appearance of initial symptoms of panic attack, wrongly thinking that hot coffee, for example, can relax and warmth the system. Well, now you know the opposite happens.

Another good way to stop panic attack is by taking psychotherapy. Because the number of panic attack cases is rapidly rising all over the world, there are many psychologists and psychiatrists who are practicing activities to control and curtail panic attacks. Stop panic attack by subjecting yourself from such therapies, which have already been proven to be very helpful.

Most of all, the most effective means to stop panic attack is by taking a better grasp and control of yourself. If you could control your fears and anxieties, you are most likely to stop panic attack alone. Remember that medications and therapies would render futile if you would not seek to help yourself most of all.

Before we dive into learning the different types of panic attacks, it may be worthwhile to first clarify the difference between anxiety and panic. In our daily communications, people tend to use these two terms interchangeably without realising their difference. Sure, these two have lots of in common with respect to their symptoms, but panic attacks usually last only a short while, though more intense. As a contrast, anxiety strikes you more gradually, is less intense, but lasts longer.

Based on whether a panic attack connects to a triggering situation and how it connects to such situations, panic attacks are grouped into three types:

1. Unexpected Panic Attacks

This type of attack is often associated with panic disorder. It occurs spontaneously without any clear reasons, and irrespective of whether you are relaxing or working. This means that we can hardly relate the occurrence of a spontaneous attack to any specific situation or place. As you may have seen in the movies, people can be awakened from sleep with this type of attack.

2. Situationally-bound Panic Attacks

As its name suggests, this type of panic attack is triggered by a specific situation. For example, if you fear flying or public speaking, exposure to these situations will result in immediate panic attacks. This ‘cued’ attack is rarely experienced in panic disorder.

3. Situationally-predisposed Panic Attacks

This type of panic attack is similar to the above one in that it is also triggered by a specific situation. However, the difference is that the attacks only sometimes occur and may not always occur immediately after exposure to the feared situation. For example, if flying is your feared situation, there are times when you take a flight without having a panic attack. However, in some other times, you do not suffer panic attack until you finish your journey for some while. In other words, you are predisposed to having attacks while taking flights, but the attacks are not a sure response to the fear of flying. People with panic disorder may experience this type of attack.

As you may probably understand, some panic attacks are just phobias over a particular event or place, but others may be truly medical conditions which you should take seriously. It is reported that approximately 19 million people in the United States are panic attack sufferers and they experience a variety of symptoms during panic attacks. Many, however, do not take panic attacks seriously or believe they deserve treatment as a medical condition. It is true that many people who have experience of panic attacks never have further episodes or complications. However, you should keep in mind that chronic occurrence of panic attacks can be a sign of panic disorder, which deserve immediate medical help. Quite often, major disorders could prevent a sufferer from pursuing normal daily routines.

With different types of panic attacks and their different levels of complications, various ways of medical interventions are used. Those commonly used ways of treament include traditional medicine, behavorial therapy, and alternative medicines. In many other instances, however, people are able to live with their panic attacks or use self-help techniques to get out of the situations.

Your first panic attack should be a learning experience that will help you control attacks in the future. Sometimes people with a panic attack go to the emergency room thinking they are having a heart attack as the symptoms are similar and come on suddenly. You’ll feel things like sudden periods of extreme fear, anxiety, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling, rapid heart beat, hyperventilation, tingling sensation, nausea, etc. When they learn that it was a panic attack and knowing the difference they can start taking control of their future attacks. This is important because often a panic attack will keep you from even functioning.

Panic attacks are caused by many physical, mental and emotional triggers. Genetics may play a part and females are more apt to get them than men. Allergies or sensitivities to food, drink or chemicals can trigger an attack along with memories or trauma. Alcohol and drug can also cause panic attacks and disorders. Serious and upsetting experiences along with everyday events could trigger an attack.

Panic disorder may lead to “situational avoidance,” where the sufferer feels they have to avoid every place or situation in where attack has occurred and might not even leave their house which could be a very serious disruption to a normal life.

Control subjects were less likely to have panic attacks then patients with panic disorders after both drank a high amount of caffeine, according to results of a small study by Isabella Nascimento, MD, and colleagues at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.

People who had went to a doctor for treatment told me that they were usually told they should avoid caffeine in colas, coffee, chocolate and teaI’ve talked with several people who gave me the following natural treatments they have used to cure or avoid panic attacks without using medicine.

Deep Breathing

One of the best forms of panic attack relief is to simply take deep, slow breaths to prevent hyperventilation. By getting hyperventilation under control you avoid things such as the dizziness and lightheadedness which happens because there is too much oxygen being taken to the brain at one time.

Exercise

This appears to be a one of the best ways of dealing with a panic attack once it’s started. An adrenaline rush usually accompanies an attack and the exercise can bleed it off according to people who use it.

Aroma therapy

After listening to a number of people talk about using aroma therapy to combat panic attacks it appears there are two schools of thought. The first swears by using smells that bring back pleasant memories, such as baby powder, certain flowers, farm animals or barbecuing. The others said that aromas from essential oils or candles were the best.

Meditation

This is a way that several people said helped them from having attacks or by being able to stop them once they started.

Think happy thoughts or take your mind off your problem

Others told me that once an attack started they tried to empty their mind of anything but pleasant things that they had done in the past and it appeared to help them. They also said taking your mind off the attack with things like counting backwards from one hundred was helpful.

The above ways are used by ordinary people to cure or get over a panic attack. In some cases they just can’t do it themselves and need professional help. Below is some information on several different natural methods used to cure people with panic disorders.

Getting Professional Help

Hypnosis

Diane Ulicsni, director of The Hypnosis Center in Lake Oswego, Ore., suffered from chronic panic attacks for many years. She finally found relief through hypnosis and is now a board certified hypnotherapist. She says that hypnosis — recognized by the American Medical Association since 1958 as a form of treatment — is one approach that is non-drug and can greatly ease or even cure panic attacks.

Laugh your panic attacks away?

That’s a good strategy, says Steve Sultanoff, PHD, a clinical psychologist in Irvine, Calif., and past president of the American Association for Therapeutic Humor. He uses humor visualization with his panic attack patients, telling them to imagine themselves in a situation where they’ve laughed uncontrollably. When they have a panic situation, they are able to return to the picture of themselves laughing.

Cognitive Behavorial Therapy

James D Herbert, PHD, associate professor of clinical psychology at MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, says that cognitive behavioral therapy is his choice for treating panic disorders. Cognitive-behavior therapy is made up of two parts: One is to identify and modify the thinking patterns that produces anxiety (cognitive therapy), and lessening anxiety by exposing the patient to fearful scenarios (behavior therapy).

If you suffer from panic attacks try some of the treatments listed above. They have worked for people I talked with and maybe they’ll work for you too.

Panic attacks are characterized by a sudden episode which seems to cause a hindrance to our normal everyday lives. While panic attacks are often ignored as a normal occurrence, it needs to be understood that panic attacks are the root cause for various ailments, besides of course, a dull, listless and terrifying life. Taking cue from the above statement, let us now throw some light on the lesser known secrets behind your panic attacks.

It May Have Been Be Triggered From A Past Episode

Anxiety panic attacks are known to be triggered owing to a past experience. It is a kind of trauma which has been witnessed in the past but is yet to be forgotten by our brain. When a person suddenly recalls this past episode through a seemingly visual appearance, he/she is said to have suffered a panic attack. It is interesting to note that over 95% of the total patients suffering from panic attacks seem to have developed a fancy towards panicking unnecessarily and have not witnessed a life threatening situation before.

Anxiety Panic Attacks Have A Short Life Span

Whenever you are said to be suffering from an anxiety panic attack, you are in reality panicking for about a minute or two. Thereafter, you tend to simmer down and within half an hour to an hour from the time you suffered a stress panic attack, you are back to your normal self again. It has also been studied that three fourth of the patients suffering from a stress panic attack are women. While treating panic attacks, it has been noticed that most patients fall in the age group of 20 to 30 years. Hence, these attacks seldom affect teenagers and people who are over the age of 40.

Panic Attack Symptoms an Be Detected By The Patient

Panic attack symptoms can easily be studied by the patient. In case the patient is suffering from a raging heartbeat, is having difficulty in breathing, is terrified to the extent of being paralyzed with fear, is nervous and shaking, is feeling lightheaded, is choking, has chest pains, has a tingling sensation in the toes and fingers and feels as though he/she is about to go crazy or die, the patient is said to be suffering from a panic related attack. Causes of panic attacks can be plenty but if you suffer from any one of these symptoms, you need to get yourself treated through a tried and tested natural therapy.

The Main Reasons Behind Anxiety Disorders

While sleep panic attacks are known to be caused by a past trauma, most attacks which exhibit a high anxiety level are said to have been caused by a mental trauma which seemingly has left a lasting impression in the mind of the sufferer. These attacks often force the patient to rush straight to a medical center. Nonetheless, these attacks persist several times a month and may last for two to five minutes at a stretch. A large population of the American population is stated to suffer from severe panic attacks and is need for immediate medical assistance.

Medication Is Not The Cure For Anxiety Disorders

Most people who suffer from panic related attacks rush straight to the nearest medical center and try to cure panic attacks through sleep inducing drugs and anti depressants. Unfortunately, these drugs simply put you to sleep without even analyzing your disorder, let alone trying to cure it. In such a scenario, you need to adopt a tried and tested natural therapy which would eradicate the root cause of your anxiety attacks. If you wish to be free of these attacks, you need to be willing to forget your traumatic experience from within. Hence, a natural therapy is considered a permanent cure for your anxiety related problems.

Panic attacks are frightening but fortunately physically harmless episodes. Panic disorder is a common condition in which a person has episodes of intense fear or anxiety that occur suddenly. These episodes–called panic attacks–can last from minutes to hours. They may occur only once in a while, or they may occur quite frequently. They can occur at random or after a person is exposed to various events that may “trigger” a panic attack. Panic disorder sufferers usually have a series of intense episodes of extreme anxiety, known as panic attacks. These attacks typically last 10 minutes however can be short lived- 1-5 minutes as well. Some individuals deal with these events on a regular basis—sometimes daily or weekly. The outward symptoms of a panic attack often cause negative social experiences. As a result, as many as 36% of all individuals with panic disorder also have agoraphobia. At least 1.7% of adult Americans, or about 3 million people, will have panic attacks at some time in their lives. Panic attacks are a period of intense fear in which 4 of 13 defined symptoms develop abruptly and peak rapidly less than 10 minutes from symptom onset.

Some people are affected by frequent panic attacks, a condition known as panic disorder. Panic disorder is thought to be inherited for the most part. People experiencing panic attacks may fear they are dying, that they are suffocating, or that they are having a heart attack. Panic attacks can indicate the presence of panic disorder, depression, or other forms of anxiety-based illnesses. About 5% of the population will experience panic attacks during their lifetimes. A person experiencing a panic attack may believe that he or she is having a heart attack or that death is imminent. The fear and terror that a person experiences during a panic attack are not in proportion to the true situation and may be unrelated to what is happening around them. Panic Disorder can continue for months or even years, depending on how and when treatment is sought. There is also some evidence that many individuals may experience a cessation of symptoms naturally later in life. Panic attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep. Panic attacks are treated with reassurance and relaxation techniques.

Most people get better with treatment. Panic Disorder is real and potentially disabling, but it can be controlled and successfully treated. People frequently go to hospital emergency rooms when they are having panic attacks, and extensive medical tests may be performed to rule out these other conditions, thus creating further anxiety. Tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine and MAO inhibitors such as phenelzine (Nardil) have also been used, but many individuals experience side effects that are difficult to tolerate. Exposure to the phobia trigger multiple times without a resulting panic attack (due to medication) can often break the phobia-panic pattern, allowing people to function around their phobia without the help of medications. Most stimulant drugs (caffeine, nicotine, cocaine) would be expected to worsen the condition, since they directly increase the symptoms of panic, such as heart rate. Stress-relieving activities such as tai-chi, yoga, and physical exercise can also help ameliorate the causes of panic disorder.

Panic Attack Treatment Tips

1. Tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine and MAO inhibitors such as phenelzine (Nardil) have also been used.

2. Exposure to the phobia trigger multiple times without a resulting panic attack.

3. Stress-relieving activities such as tai-chi, yoga, and physical exercise can also help ameliorate the causes of panic disorder.

4. Avoid stimulants, such as nicotine and caffeine, which can be found not only in coffee, but many teas, colas and chocolate.

5. Psychotherapy offers support and helps to minimize the fearfulness of symptoms, and sometimes is sufficient to clear up the disorder.

6. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps people learn to deal with panic symptoms, using techniques like muscle and breathing relaxation.

7. Antidepressants, such as Tofranil, often help reduce anxiety and the frequency and severity of panic attacks.

8. Meta-analyses13-15 support the efficacy of CBT in improving panic symptoms and overall disability.

I know someone who has been having panic attacks for 2 weeks now! They have already been to the doctor and diagnosed now I guess it’s just a waiting game for the meds to kick in. Anyway since they have been having them she doesn’t want to be alone. If she is for the smallest amount of time then she freaks out. Should someone always be there with her or should she be better off getting over it herself? She feels as though she CONSTANTLY needs someone there during the day! Is this even normal for a panic attack?
