You constantly check over and over small things, such as locking a door, keeping some object some where and so on. Fear, mannerisms and diligence can be observed as early signs of OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder. In fact, there is only a thin line that separates both. The strength, intensity and frequency tend to enhance at a slow pace. This is the reason that people do not identify the symptoms and when they actually do, it is already too late.

It is important for people to understand the difference between OCPD and OCD as it rules out advance OCD symptoms awareness completely. People with OCPD or obsessive compulsive personality disorder remains unaffected about their reactions and behaviors.

OCD or Obsessive compulsive disorder is a problem many Americans struggle with. It actually has two components, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. The compulsive behaviors are usually the soothing mechanism for the obsessive thoughts. These thoughts can be quite disturbing and preoccupy a great deal of time. It is important to understand and address the disturbing thoughts that are fueling the compulsions.

We´ve probably all joked that someone we know might be too organized, too neat, and too orderly. While these characteristics are certainly good in small doses, when taking to the extreme, they can actually be quite disruptive.

Let´s take the case of Barbara; she has a cleaning compulsion, a very common manifestation of OCD. Her house is immaculate; there isn´t a stray object, a speck of dust or any dirt to be seen in any corner or crevice of the house. This is certainly a great, clean environment to live in; however, the drive to keep her house so clean is compelled by an exaggerated fear of germs and dirt. 

We all want to avoid germs, but few of us would spend hours, upon hours, cleaning surfaces that have already been cleaned, wiping off door knobs every time someone has touched them, following people around the house, cleaning up after them. Barbara has been unable to keep a boyfriend because frankly, they were just too messy and brought too many germs into her environment.

• You are afraid of germs, poisons, or other contaminants in your environment and food

• You are afraid of hurting someone else or harm coming to someone you care about

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. The repetitive, distressing thoughts or images that become the obsessions for sufferers cause a tremendous amount of anxiety that can only be placated by the ritualistic compulsions that temporarily work to soothe the anxious mind and stop the obsessive thoughts. 

However, the compulsions are only a temporary fix and need to be repeated every time the thoughts crop up. Moreover, some people become so obsessive about stopping or preventing the obsessive thoughts and images that they perform their rituals almost constantly to prevent the occurrence of the unwanted thoughts.

Are you neat? Do you like to keep everything organized, orderly and tidy? While these are great character traits in the normal course for both your work environment and your home environment, they can become confining when taken to an extreme. 

If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, you take these tendencies to both an extreme and disruptive degree. If you spend so long organizing the pencils on your desk that you can´t complete the project you´re working on in a timely manner then obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD has impacted your life.
