Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Archives

Question by : What is the difference between Cognitive Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
I am healing from post concussion syndrome and I was told to get Cognitive Therapy. I have realized that there’s Cognitive Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. What is the difference between them? I was talking to two friends of mine who are telling me that I would have to go to a physical therapist or a speech specialist for it because what I need is help getting my focus back and remembering things. They said they should be doing things like solving puzzles and stuff like that. Their views don’t seem right. Any help would be great!

Anyone try Cognitive Behavioral Therapy before?

Question by Dave M: Anyone try Cognitive Behavioral Therapy before?
I just started my first CBT session with my therapist yesterday and it was ok I guess. The first day we worked on a sheet together. Basically it had 7 columns: Trigger, Automatic thought, Feelings, Behavior/Reaction, Examine Automatic Though, Reframe Automatic Thought, and Behavioral Plan. I gave him two situations where my anxiety got out of control. One was walking into a crowded room and two was talking with someone one one one and feeling weird about looking them in the eye. So, we went through that and I guess we’re gonna continue next week with more examples. It seems too simple to work, but I guess the more I do it, the more I will start using it in real life. Not sure, hoping for the best. Has anyone here tried CBT? Was it positive? Negative? How long did it take before you started seeing results?

How effective is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Question by : How effective is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
I suffer from OCD but I am unable to continue medication because I am pregnant. I am keen to try CBT but I am curious about how long it will take to see results – although I know this must vary for each person – but is it a highly recommended treatment for OCD?
TA!

Will being on Amitriptyline disqualify me from being a police officer?

Question by : Will being on Amitriptyline disqualify me from being a police officer?
In April, I was attacked by a girl and my head hit a cement wall. I got a concussion and now I have post concussion syndrome. I was put on Amitriptyline until the neurotransmitters in my head regulate. Will this disqualify me from being a police officer. I see a counselor who diagnosed me with a mood disorder following a traumatic brain injury. I can recover from this through exercising, enough rest, medication, and I have to go to cognitive behavioral therapy. Also, the police charged the girl and I with a summons of harassment but it was dismissed in court and I had to pay court costs. The judge said it will not show up on my record and I’m planning on getting everything expunged. Other than these two things, I am a female, 5″5, weight 150 pounds, and a college student. I made the Deans list. Am I still able to become a police officer?

How can I deal with my beliefs about women?

Question by poiuytrewq: How can I deal with my beliefs about women?
I have the belief that ‘women are controlled by subconscious forces that neither they nor others can understand, and about which they deceive both themselves and others’. This belief causes problems in my relationship because I cannot trust my partner.
I’ve been doing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which says you should look for evidence that challenges your unhelpful beliefs – but the nature of this belief makes it unfalsifiable – nothing a woman could do and say could prove it wrong!
Therefore I don’t know how I can overcome it. Any ideas?

Question by Tony: Are there any areas that receive little to no lightning and thundershowers?
I’m terrified of lightning and have been for over twenty years. I’ve tried everything from research to cognitive behavioural therapy, especially since I’ve developed panic disorder, but nothing works for me. I currently live in a city that receives over 100 thundershowers every summer, and was wondering If there is a place to live that receives less than five a year?

Can figure drawing (under certain conditions) help to stop sexualizing the body?

Question by Sean: Can figure drawing (under certain conditions) help to stop sexualizing the body?
I have a problem with porn and looking at women (and sometimes men) in terms of seeing them as an image or figure to sexually consume. I’ve been working with cognitive-behavioral therapy toward stopping this.

I’ve lately started figure drawing over the last month, and have found it relaxing. I’ve tried to find nude images that highlight an aspect of the models which I find non-sexual and emotionally resonant. At the same time, I sometimes worry that I’m still sexualizing the bodies of those depicted, even when being very particular in my selection. But perhaps over time, might sketching help toward seeing the overall rather than immediate attitude of the models, and thus a more personal part of them?

Question by kimpenn09: How has your doctor/therapist treated your agoraphobia?
My therapist suggested today that I might be agoraphobic, mainly because I have trouble leaving and staying away from my apartment and feel very uncomfortable outside of the safety of familiar places and faces. (I won’t go into details.) I am wondering what kind of therapy other agoraphobics have received. I am in traditional psychotherapy now, but think I might benefit better from cognitive behavioral therapy, both for this and my OCD/depression.

How to do CBT during social interaction?

Question by LILi Rodri: How to do CBT during social interaction?
I have a form of social anxiety disorder. I’m trying to do Cognitive behavioral therapy, but I find it hard to do it while I’m interacting with someone.
When you’re talking to someone, you have to listen, and say something back!
How can I think and rationalize what I’m feeling when at the same time I have to pay attention to what the person is saying, and thinking about what I’m going to respond to the person?? It’s overwhelming!
Can anyone help me with some pratical tips? Thanks!!
