Agoraphobia is an abnormal and persistent fear of public places or open areas, especially those from which escape could be difficult or help not immediately accessible. The very word agoraphobia itself lets us know the nature of this debilitating condition. ‘Agora’ comes from the Greek language and it means places where people meet, or a marketplace. ‘Phobia’ is a fear of something. Thus we can understand that people who suffer from agoraphobia have a fear of being in crowded places.
Social Phobia is an interpersonal pattern of behavior which is most likely to appear and cause distress when a person feels that their social goals of asserting their wishes or gaining approval from others are dangerously unattainable or likely to fail. It is a form of self-overprotection from perceived social threats.

This article aims at inspiring both therapists and people “suffering” from a phobia or any other issue for that matter. I believe that people cannot have depression, people can behave depressingly; people cannot have anorexia, people can eat disorderly; people cannot have a phobia, people can behave fearfully etc. These behaviours cannot be purchased at a shop; they cannot be picked up by others. We choose (whether that’s consciously or unconsciously) to be depressed, to eat disorderly, to have that phobia and only when we can accept this do we realise that as we have chosen to have the problem we can now choose to change.
For some individuals phobias of any kind have a constant and limiting effect on their life. No matter how irrational they may appear they are a serious issue for the sufferer.

Many of agoraphobia sufferers are being mislead by information that there is a specific agoraphobia treatment. The fact is there isn’t.Inexperienced doctors and medical practitioners will give you drugs for depression or sedatives which make you feel weak and drowsy. Sometimes they will send you for sessions of counseling. These have both been proven to be very unsuccessful agoraphobia treatments indeed.
For agoraphobia treatment to be successful, it needs to address the source of the high anxiety that causes it. There really is no other agoraphobia Treatment/.

Question by Crashandburn.: Seeing as I have a Generalized Anxiety Disorder does that mean I shouldn’t become a psychologist?
I have Generalised Anxiety I am seventeen does this mean that I shouldn’t pursure the career of being a psychologist as I am not mentally stable myself so how can I help someone overcome their mental instability? It actually saddens me the thought that seeing as I have this I may not be able to have the career I want. I know there are ways to cope and make myself calm and not have anxiety, but won’t it always be there? Is there such thing as an anxiety disorder going away.
